Guitar and Strap - What Should Your Guitar Look For in a Strap?
Ideally, a guitar and strap should be a perfect match. You put your strap on your guitar, your guitar on you, and then nothing gets broken or hurt.
However, different straps with their diverse sizes, lengths, materials, padding, and attachments may be able to better serve your guitar. Here are some questions that you should ask yourself before you go out and purchase a guitar strap.
* How wide should my guitar strap be?
For a guitar and strap, width usually affects the amount of comfort when your guitar is on your shoulders. Ideally, the wider the strap, the more comfortable you'll be wearing it.
However, wide guitar straps don't handle as well for guitar tricks on stage. So, if you like to perform guitar whips when that hardcore break-down comes, refrain from getting a wider strap for your guitar.
* How long should my guitar strap be?
The length of your guitar strap really depends on how low you want your guitar to hang. Do you feel more comfortable strumming your guitar near your waste or higher up near you chest?
Of course, guitar straps are adjustable, but adjustments can only go so far. Make sure you purchase a strap that allows your guitar to hang right in that sweet spot of comfort.
* What should my guitar strap be made of?
When asking yourself this question, you might also ask, "How long do I want my guitar strap to last?" If you buy a cheap material like thin leather, then you can't count on your guitar strap lasting for decades. Oppositely, if you aim for a nylon strap you can probably count on a long haul for your guitar.
* How much padding do I want on my guitar strap?
Does wearing a thin guitar strap bother your shoulder from the weight of your guitar? Maybe you need all the real luxury of a padded strap.
Hey, there's no shame in purchasing a guitar strap for comfort. You might be up on stage for hours. The least you can do is be comfortable.
* How should my strap attach to my guitar?
If you're a calm guitarist on stage then a standard strap should suffice. If you sway, walk up and down stage, or take a few quick jumps, then a guitar strap that attaches normally should serve well.
However, if you jump around often, run or jog, or perform guitar whips on stage, then you would be more inclined to purchase a locking guitar strap. A locking guitar strap takes the extra precautions to prevent your strap from disconnecting from your guitar during excessive pressure on the attachments.
If you think about it, a guitar strap is almost as important as your guitar. If one or the other fails at doing its job, you could be devastated. Make sure you think about the most appropriate strap for your guitar and get what you need.
