How to Record Guitar at Home Using Indirect Recording

Indirect recording is what I would call the “old school” method of actually plugging into a real guitar amplifier, and using a microphone to record the sound. Minimally this method requires an amplifier, one or two microphones, mic-preamp and a converter. However, a whole heap of other units can be added, for example eq’s, mixers, compressors etc.

Before we get too technical, let’s first talk about the signal path. The signal path is the path that the audio takes from the microphone to get into the computer, and what happens along the way. For example - a simple signal path beginning at your microphone and ending at your computer workstation may include the following units along the way.

Below is a very basic signal chain showing how the signal travels from your guitar to your computer via various units.

Guitar > Amp > Mic > Mic Pre-Amp > EQ > Compressor > Converter > Computer

This illustration shows that once your guitar is amped, the sound will be picked up by a microphone, then sent to the mic pre-amp, which will boost the signal, and make it loud enough to actually use. From there the sound source could be send to some sort of eq unit, and a compressor to alter the levels. Finally the signal is sent to the convertor which will allow the music to reach your computer. Now, if I’ve lost you already, fear not!

Let’s take a quick look at what these different units do and how they work.

Microphone - When it comes to recording guitar at home, the microphone you choose can have a huge impact on the overall sound of your recording. A microphone is a device made to capture waves in air, water or hard material and translate them to an electrical signal. The most common method is via a thin membrane producing some proportional electrical signal.

Most microphones in use today for audio use electromagnetic generation (dynamic microphones) capacitance change (condenser microphones) or piezoelectric generation to produce the signal from mechanical vibration.

There are a lot of things to consider when it comes to the sound you get from your microphone, not only in terms of price and quality, but also where you actually place the mic in relation to your amplifier. Whilst the chances of getting a great recording are consistently better with a high quality microphone, price and quality do not always match.

Mic-Preamps - The signal that a microphone picks up is actually very low, and needs to be boosted for it to be used with your recording device. This is exactly what a mic-preamp does. It boosts the signal to a level that is useable for recording.

You may already have a mic preamp on your computer; however this is only designed for speech and is unfortunately unsuitable for any serious recording

Compressors - A compressor is a device that reduces (compresses) the dynamic range in a sound sources softest point to its loudest point to smooth the output, and can bring your audio material up to spec with professional recordings.

An instrument that goes from very quiet and very loud over the course of a song can be difficult to record and mix. Either the quiet parts get lost or the loud sections overload the recording.

Converters - In very basic terms the converter is the equipment that takes your analog audio from your compressor, eq unit, mic-preamp etc, and creates a digital representation, which is sent to, and is now useable with your computer.

Keep in mind that this is one of the most important units in your signal chain and it’s well worth spending a little more money to get a high quality converter.

Hopefully this has given you a little insight into the basics of recording, allowing you to see what equipment you will need and what each piece of kit does.

what is compressor (guitar pedal)?

i have a digitech RP50

i can't tell the difference from the compressor of 0 to 15

what is it for or what does it do?

cmpressor isnt a dramatic effect like distortion or the like. it is to bring up the volume of the softer strings and bring down the volume of the hotter strings giveing you a well balanced sound from top to bottom.it acual COMPRESSES the hotter more prevelant frequncies.set on one isnt oing much set all the way high is over compressing and cuts your tone too much.
it gives a fullnes and a balance almost like an EQ.
i am a country "chickenpicker" a compressor for me is a nust have item. if you play like a shredder or lots of distortion, then sale it cause you dont need it. country,jazz,blues,fine....
to get a good idea how it should sound, check Brent mason,Albert Lee,Doug 7,Brad Pasily,James Burton, and the like. Steve Travato put out a great video called getting the sound. it covers a lot of that stuff. good to know even if you dont play the genre...

The Facts About Air Compressors

An air compressor is a device built to compress or consolidate air inside a tank. Air compressors work fairly similarly to the way our lungs work when we hold our breath and, perhaps, blow up a balloon. The air is pulled and compressed in the tank (like air in our lungs) increasing the air's pressure and decreasing its volume. When using the tool, the compressed air releases through a hose in a steady, powerful stream - like from our lungs and out of our pursed lips in a bursting stream of air. In compressors, the air pressure inside the tank will continue to increase until it reaches a preset pressure limit. The tool's pressure limit varies from high to low with the type and size of your compressor. Air compressors also feature a regulator that is set to compliment the specific tool's and application's required pressure.

Compresses are used for a variety of purposes from powering pneumatic or power tools (like nailers, and staplers) blowing dust and debris off/out of those power tools, or as an inflation device for tires, flotation devices, and etc. Available in a variety of sizes and capacities, air compressors are versatile and surprisingly long-lasting; a good model could certainly last a lifetime if properly cared for. Using compressor powered pneumatic tools offers a number of benefits; pneumatically powered tools tend to be more brawny than those powered with strictly electricity, they offer greater torque and higher RPM for quick work and rapid firing. Pneumatic tools also offer an environmentally friendly alternative to toxic battery waste.

There are two types of air compressor, gas or electric, but each of these types is available with a few variations. Some compressors are small and portable, others are very large and stationary - the amount of power your compressor has generally coincides with its size. These large, stationary compressors are best suited for industrial applications and can be used by more that one person simultaneously. Compressors also vary from single stage to two stages; a two stage motor has the ability to change speeds during more constant and rigorous actions - essentially a two stage motor works harder when you need it to. Lastly, some compressors require oil lubrication while others run entirely without oil. Oil lubricated compressors tend to run more quietly; they do, however, require oil changes, operation on a flat, level surface, and may release an oil mist into the air which is highly ill-suited for applications like painting. Although many craftsmen prefer to use oil-lubed compressors because they tend to last longer and run quieter (as with any other type) they may not be practical for some applications.

Gas powered compressors are optimal on jobsites or construction zones that have not yet been outfitted with electrical power. These compressors provide the power and speed of pneumatic tools without the need for power cords or electricity. Gas compressors must, however, be used in open and well ventilated areas. Electric compressors are generally the best choice for home and shop use. They tend to run more quietly and don't stink up the joint, if you will, with a gas motor.

Keeping your air compressor well maintained will truly determine how long your compressor will keep on kicking. There are a few simple steps to ensuring your compressor remains in optimal condition, and you certainly won't regret the time you spend caring for your tool. The compression that occurs in the air tanks of your compressor causes moisture to accumulate inside those tanks. That moisture, in turn, runs the risk of rusting out the tanks, and potentially destroying a paint mixture (if used with a paint sprayer). On the bottom of the compressor there is a moisture release valve; it is crucial to release this valve with every use, this should prevent rust or other water damage. An in-line filter can also be be purchased for any compressor to eliminate water mist in your air lines.

Its important to inspect your compressors; periodically check and tighten any fasteners, make sure your air filters are running clean and replace them when necessary, check your hoses often for breaks, cracks, or leaks and be prepared to replace them when needed as well. Its also important to be certain that the compressors safety valve is functional. The safety valve (either automatically or manually) releases air should the compressor become over-pressurized; a vital feature, so be sure its operational or have it repaired. If you have an oil-lubed compressor, check the oil levels before each use to make sure the tool is properly lubricated. Change the oil as the manufacturer recommends. As far as cleanliness is concerned, its always beneficial to keep all your tools clean as a whistle and especially important to keep the compressor's intake vents clean and clear. If you have a gas compressor you may also consider periodically cleaning the fuel tank for good measure.

A good compressor is a superior tool, and can truly take the edge off a jobsite or home-repair project. With unmatched speed and power a compressor and their partnering pneumatic tools will change the way you build. Love your compressor, purchase the model that best suits you, keep it well-maintained, and your compressor will work as hard as you do.

DO I really need A compressor for my DJ set?

I just recently bought a Behringer MDX 2100 Compressor, Limiter, Gate, Expander But was told that I really didn't need it. So could I do without it or would it be something I would need? And if so what difference would it make? I mainly play Country, Oldies, 80's Rock and onoccasionn play Hip Hop and lots of Techno.

I used to bother with a compressor, but I found it to be little more than extra wires and power consumption.

If you run a complicated system with many amps and speakers, ok you might want to tame some parts of your signal path. Most club systems run compressors for a few reasons, but a basic DJ system doesn't need one. (If a microphone is going to be used a lot, especially by screamers, the limiter might be handy, but you can cut it down on your mixer.)

These days, I just use a nice little powered sub and one pair of 15" 2 way mains with a good power amp. It sounds great, and I have plenty control right off my mixer. A compressor could allow me to push my volumes higher without harsh peaks, but I like my system just the way it is. I take my time to level out the sub in relation to the mains, then I eq each track using the 3-bands on my mixer. It sounds fantastic all the way across the frequency spectrum in bars, clubs, and even mid-sized halls.

Pro audio engineers may see this differently, but I see no need for a compressor on a basic DJ rig.

Sustainability and Minimising the Environmental Impact of your Chiller

As the global psyche turns to environmental concerns, the refrigeration industry is not immune to customer demands for sustainable products that minimise their environmental impact. Creating innovative solutions that reduce energy consumption is something that Australian company Summit Matsu Chilling Systems considers key to its company’s success and believes will become a key factor in any company’s competitive advantage in years to come.

In addition to keeping pace with industry wide developments such as variable speed refrigeration compressors and eco-friendly refrigerants, Australian water chiller manufacturer Matsu Chilling Systems focuses on increased chiller life as an eco-friendly approach.

“Matsu Chilling Systems uses only the highest quality components to ensure longer chiller life” said General Manager Daniel Rollston. “We see some of our competitors using thinner grades of aluminium for condenser fins, or not epoxy coating the fins, or using thinner grades of steel for cabinets, which just translates to shorter product life. This results in the need to replace equipment sooner and we believe this surely has a greater environmental impact than just buying a product like ours that is built for durability. When you look at the total cost of chiller ownership Matsu Chilling Systems has a very good case.”

When making the purchasing decision, Summit Matsu recommends looking for the following features to ensure that your chiller is as environmentally sound as possible:

  1. Use of chlorine free refrigerants. 407C and 134a refrigerants which do not deplete the ozone layer. These refrigerants also have a safety rating and are rated by ASHRAE* Standard 34 as “A1” meaning lower toxicity and no flame propagation.

  1. Use of “screw” type refrigeration compressors. These are by far the most efficient in terms of power consumption. Less power consumption = less greenhouse gas emissions.

  1. Use of variable drive refrigeration compressors. Compressors are the heart of all chillers and pump refrigerant around the circuit. By using an automatic capacity control chillers conserve power by reducing capacity when only a small amount of chiller capacity is required.

  1. Use of high quality steel frames designed for outdoor use. Frames are designed to last for 20+ years. A chiller bought once will have a lower environmental impact than one that needs to be replaced.

  1. Use of high quality aluminium for finned heat exchangers. 12 fins per inch as standard. Some manufacturers use a thinner grade of aluminium and up to 18 fins per inch to save on space but these have a limited life.

  1. Use of epoxy coating on condenser fins – leads to less fin corrosion and longer condenser fin life.

  1. Customised options for chiller durability in harsh environments. Additions could include marine grade aluminium or stainless steel casings, aluminium sound attenuators, or copper / copper finned coils for marine environments.

I only got the HD300 yesterday but it was working fine and giving off no noise when i used it both yesterday and this morning. But tonight the amp is giving out very loud noise when the distortion is on. Absolutely nothing has changed from my usual playing; there are no new electrical devices around, and everything is laid out the same. But when checking the Overdrive on the amp itself, it gives off an identical but slightly quieter noise. The amp only seems to be doing it when any kind of distortion is active, but it's only just begun to do this. Is this a problem with the amp or the pedal, and how is it fixed?

Loose earth/screen on the pedal. Is the pedal battery powered ?

Where do I place an MXR Dyna Comp compressor guitar pedal in my pedal set up?

What should and shouldn't go before this in my pedal order?

I have all the usual suspects - distortion, fuzz, reverb, delay, tremelo, etc....

Put the compressor as the first pedal that the guitar plugs into on your pedalboard. The reason is that a compressor has a circuit in it that reads signal fluctuations and turns that into a dc voltage which controls the gain of the pedal. If the compressor is connected directly to the guitar, it can see the full range of peaks that is being generated by the pickups and is able to properly control its gain element. If you place the compressor after a fuzz or distortion pedal, then the dynamic fluctuations of the guitar signal are clipped off by the distortion circuit (or diodes) and the compressor does not have an input that is ideally suited for signal control.
