I am starting a small buisness...i will be building custom electric guitars and basses...what advice can you a

I have been building guitars since 1978 and am featured in a gazillion articles and books yet I still work in another full time position. My advice to you is to make sure you have a second job and build for love, not profit.

If you are considering just assembling guitars from pieces purchasd elsewhere it won't take you long to realize there is no money in it. If you construct your own bodies and necks you will have a better chance of profit as long as you do high quality work ESPECIALLY when it comes to finishes... many excellent guitars are overlooked because of a lousy finish.

Take a lot of time and source your other parts from good suppliers. Buying retail- even once- will destroy your margins.

One of my buddies told me something that has stuck with me for many years. He suggested that the way to make a small fortune in the guitar business is to start with a large fortune and be able to make a heck of a good chair to boot.
