How often should the car air filter be replaced?
I have an honest mechanic who told me today that I don't have to follow my car's factory maintenance schedule to change the air filter. I use this car only for commute for 20 miles round trip daily on weekdays. Wondering how often should I replace the air filter in your opinion. Thanks.
whenever it gets dirty, think of it just like any air filter. you pull it out and if its white and clean, with not too much debris stuck in it, then its still clean, but once your white filter becomes black, and you have large stuff stuck in it like pieces of leaves and dirt and bugs, then its time to clean it. what i recommend is a K&N filter, its a replacement which instead of being made of paper, its cotton with oil, so when it gets dirty and clogged you just clean it instead of replacing it, it pays for itself in a year. im not endorsing the product or anything just letting you know about something you should look into.

Fall Into Lower Electric Bills - the Fall Season is a Perfect Time to Lock in a Lower Electric Rate
As a full-time energy analyst and business owner (www.ChooseEnergy.com), people always ask me – when is it a good time to lock in an electric rate? Well, you can “fall” into lower electric rates if you lock in during the fall months. There are peeks and valleys (head and shoulder) months in regards to energy prices. Electric rates track closely with natural gas prices and historically the months during the fall are valleys or shoulder months which makes for a good curve when trying to determine when to lock in your electric rate.
So what should you do? There still seems to be a premium on pricing out in 2012 and 2013 so I would recommend signing either a 12 or 24 month contract at the present time. This is where the rates are most attractive and the best time to end your contract during these same shoulder months so you can renegotiate during the low season.
Just as the Internet has made it easier for people to compare mortgages, travel rates and other services, ChooseEnergy.com has developed a compare and buy site that offers a trusted and objective comparison of available Texas electricity providers for residential and small commercial customers. Not only do we select the providers that participate on our site, but we also show their most attractive rate plans for your home or business. Plus, as I mentioned the fall season is a great time to lock in a lower Texas electricity rate. Electricity prices usually track with natural gas costs, and natural gas is traditionally lower in shoulder months during the fall and spring season, before consumer demand increases during the cold winter months when consumers are using more natural gas.
As I mentioned in a previous post - just like cell phone providers – like AT&T or Sprint - Retail electric providers bid on customers’ electricity business. These providers can also personalize their bids to each customer or modify their offers and terms as often as they wish. For instance, electricity retailers may offer exceptionally competitive rates tied to longer term contracts (but we recommend not signing longer than 36 months at the present time) to attract customers in a targeted geographic area or offer a renewable energy product, like energy produced from wind, for the same price as you are currently paying.
It certainly pays to not only get the right offering that fits your home or business needs, but also getting that offering at the right time. So do some shopping for your home or business during this holiday season and take advantage of fall electric rates.
What is cheaper to run for stoves, electric or natural gas???
natural gas of course

How To Select The Right Electric Garage Heater
Selecting the right Electric Garage Heater/Shop Heater is not that hard to do. There are a few pieces of information to gather before we are able to determine what we need but first lets cover some basics of electric heaters!
1. Heaters are marketed with a BTU or a wattage rating. 1 watt of electricity is equal to 3.412 BTU's of heat.
2. Typically heaters that are over 5120 BTU's are rated for 220-240v operation so be prepared for running new service lines or making changes at your box. Please consult a certified electrician for this purpose.
3. Heaters rated for 120v operate typically do not have enough wattage to produce anymore than 5120 BTU's
4. On average it takes about 10 watts per square foot to heat your spaces. Unusual circumstances in your area may require a slightly higher average based on your location. Poor insulation may also require a much higher wattage per square foot.
5. Not all garage heaters are created equal. You need to know how many CFM's the unit pushes and how far the Air Throw rating is. This is important because you want to circulate the air as quickly as possible and a low CFM rated unit will not give you the results you want and will require more energy to heat up your space which equals more money out of your pocket.
Now that we have covered a few basic bases lets do some math!
How to determine Wattage requirements:
1. Multiply the Length and Width of the room you plan to heat (This will give you the Square Footage of the room)
2. Find your location on the map located Here! This determines your basic heating zone.
3. The chart below the map lists insulation values based on the effectiveness of the insulation presently in your room. Find your heating zone on the chart and the approximate wattage per Square Foot you will need.
4. Multiply the total number of Square Feet you calculated from step one by the approx. Wattage per SF you just obtained from the chart. This will determine your total heating requirement in Watts for the room.
5. Since a Watt is equal to 3.412 BTU's simply multiply the Wattage requirement by 3.412 and this will give you your BTU's needed for the room.
Now! Lets do an example: We have a room 12'x15' We live in Zone 3 and Have Standard insulation. Based on this information we will calculate our SF to 180. We will then take our 180 SF and multiply it by 8.2 Watts which is what we need for living in Zone 3 and having Standard Insulation. This total Wattage requirement will equal 1476 Watts. To calculate the BTU's we simply take 1476 Watts x's 3.412 BTU's and we get 5036 BTU's This puts us in range of a 5000 BTU Heater!
Its as easy as that! You have now narrowed you search for an Electric Garage Heater(Please note your estimate may need to be increased due to strong wind, high altitudes or other unusual conditions in your area)

Popular Today Show Host Al Roker'S Red Velvet Cake
The popular weatherman/host of NBC's Today Show, Al Roker, is known for his love of cooking and his delicious dishes. Now you can make his Red Velvet Cake for your family and friends.
AL ROKER'S RED VELVET CAKE and FROSTING
CAKE:
1/2 cup solid vegetable shortening
2 cups sugar
3 large eggs
1 tsp vanilla extract
2 1/4 cups flour
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1 cup buttermilk
1 tbsp cider vinegar
1 to 4 tbsp red food coloring
Position oven rack in the center of the oven and preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter two 9-inch round cake pans and dust with flour. Set aside.
Using an electric mixer, beat together the shortening and sugar until fluffy, at least 3 minutes. Add the eggs, one at a time, to the creamed mixture, beating well after each egg. Beat in the vanilla.
In a small bowl, stir together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
In another bowl, combine the buttermilk, vinegar, and food coloring. Gradually stir the dry ingredients into the egg mixture, alternating with the buttermilk mixture until all ingredients are just incorporated and the batter is smooth. Do not over mix. Using a rubber spatula, scrape the batter evenly into the prepared pans. Bake for about 35 minutes until the cake just begins to pull away from the sides of the pans and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean. Remove from the oven and cool on wire racks for about 15 minutes. Run a knife around the edge of the pans and remove the cakes from pans by inverting them onto the racks. Turn right side up and let cool thoroughly.
The cakes can be stored, well wrapped, at room temperature for up to two days or frozen for up to two months. If frozen, thaw at room temperature before proceeding to frosting.
FROSTING:
3 tbsp flour
pinch of salt
1 cup whole milk
2 sticks unsalted butter, softened
1 cup sugar
1 tbsp vanilla extract
In a small saucepan, combine the flour, salt, and a few tablespoons of the milk; stir until smooth. Set the saucepan over low heat and stir in the remaining milk. Cook, stirring, until the mixture thickens to the consistency of gravy, about 5 minutes. Remove from the heat and let cool to room temperature. Using an electric mixer, beat together the butter, sugar, and vanilla for a minute or so until smooth. Scrape the cooled flour mixture into the butter mixture and beat on high speed for about three minutes, until the frosting is the consistency of whipped cream. (Frosting can be covered and refrigerated for up to 2 days; let sit at room temperature for about 15 minutes to reach a spreadable consistency.) Frost sides and top of cake.
Store cake, loosely covered, at room temperature for up to 24 hours. May be stored in freezer, well wrapped, for about a month. Thaw before serving
Enjoy!
Can I mix electric yellows, angelfish and red jewels?
I REALLY really like red jewels so I am getting them no matter what. But can I add electric yellows and angelfish? Will they be ok together?
There's a high chance the red jewels would rip the angels to pieces. Don't mix african and american cichlids.
And for the reasons I mentioned before re pH, the labs and jewels are not compatible either.
