How much calcium can the body absorb in one meal?
Some foods are fortified with extra calcium - Total cereal, for example, contains 1000 mg of calcium in one serving. If you ate this, would you have fulfilled your calcium requirements for the day? Or, would your body be unable to absorb it all? (so there really would be no benefit in having so much of it at once)
It depends on the form of the calcium - it is bound to other elements, some of which are easier to absorb than others. It also requires Vitamin D to be aborbed and used.
Calcium and all the minerals also need a fairly acidic stomach to be absorbed. So if you're stomach acidity is low, or you have it with a big meal (which uses up the hydrochloric acid that makes your stomach acid) you may not absorb so much.
Women need about 2-3 gm (2,000 - 3,000 mg) of calcium. I don't think the value is too high in total, but the form in which it's present may or may not be readily aborbed. I would guess that Total also have vitamin D.
Your body is seldom able to absorb all of the vitamins or minerals you eat at once. A lot of it is lost, but the actual amount you need to be absorbed is less than the required daily intake. So, the RDA of 2,000 mg for a mineral is based on the expectation that you will only aborb say 20% of it, so your body's actual need would be 400 mg.
The best source for minerals in the most bioavailable form is broth - from beef, chicken, pork bones.

is it more practical to remove frets from a bass neck or buy replacement fretless neck to put on ibanez?
i am in the market for a fretless bass and one of the salesmen at the music store described how he simply removed the frets off a regular neck and filled the groves with epoxy, sanded smooth, and he likes it. a fretless neck of decent quality will cost well over 150. i will be installing on an ibanez with very fat sounding dual active pickups. have any of you removed frets from a neck and refinished before? was it difficult? are you happy with the results- meaning, does it play as if it came fretless off the assembly line? any input is appreciated!
The music store guy lied.
Do not ruin a good bass like that, it will NOT work.
Invest in the new neck.

Anybody know a great vacation spot in New York State?
We want to get away for a short 4 day vacation in July. We live in western New York, so we have seen Niagara Falls. Not interested in the Adirondack's (been there too). Anybody know of a really great place to spend a few days that has stuff to do and nice accomodations that arent over the top expensive. Would apprecidate any ideas....
Hi...I think that you would enjoy Long Island very much...the south shore has the ocean and beautiful beaches like Jones Beach (where you can catch a concert at it's beautiful outdoor concert right on the water). The North shore has tons of cute, quaint towns from Huntington and going east to Port Jefferson, Sag Harbor, Southampton and Greenport. Take a day trip out to The Hamptons, but don't spend the night there. Finally there is Montauk Point and Lighthouse, a must for anyone visiting Long Island. Accomodations run from inexpensive Holiday Inn types to really Ritzy hotels. I suggest you check online for nice B & B's as well.

How do I find out if there is lead paint in my old house?
Need to repaint rooms that have peeling paint, but concerned about sanding paint surfaces possibly that have lead paint on original surface. Don't want to use heavy mask if don't have to.
Please do not perform most of the ideas suggested! Lead is poison. Eating it will not give you your answer and will likely poison you if it turns out to be lead paint. Scraping without proper protection can do the same. The kits you buy off the shelf are not EPA approved but may be a first step for your own discovery process. To know for sure have it professionally tested by a certified tester. This could cost you a couple hundred bucks but at least you will know how to tackle your painting project.
If your house was built before 1940 there is about a 70% chance that you have lead paint somewhere in your home.
This is a lengthy topic and one that I would recommend you educate yourself on. A great place to start is on the EPA website. I am listing a link to a pamphlet that EPA has created to begin educating the public. This gives a pretty good overview on the topic.
Please do not get discouraged if you do discover that you have lead in your home. Being smart about it can enable everyone in your household live perfectly safe. Consider speaking to professional contractors who are certified in lead abatement or who are trained in lead safe work practices.
