Installing a Standing-Seam Roof: Really a DIY Job?

If you're seriously considering a DIY standing-seam roof installation, you'd best bone up on your general knowledge regarding what is undoubtedly a great roofing solution. While successful amateur installations are not unheard of, your surest bet is to seek the help of a professional. Standing-seam roofs are made of numerous interlocking panels, which run vertically from the ridge, or edge, of the roof to its apex at the eave. The seam where any two panels interlock is raised just above the surface of the roof, allowing water to run off the roof without it dripping in between the panels. This simple structure belies numerous details of installation that, if not properly attended to, can lessen the efficacy and lifespan of the roof.

Also, should you choose to hire a professional accomplished in the craft of roofing, you're probably not going to find yourself looking at roof installation costs that are anywhere near as expensive as those of ordinary clay or fiber-glass shingle installation. Metal roofs in general and standing-seam roofs in particular are lightweight (between 1 and 2 pounds apiece), making them very easy to move around. They can also be installed over the old roof, which eliminates the time and manpower it might have required to tear the whole previous layer of roof off.

This is why, if you've already got your roofing materials, that trying to do a DIY standing-seam roof installation is going to be so much more trouble than it's really worth. If this sounds like a load of codswallop to you, and you intend to forge on no matter what the challenges, then here's a couple of metal roof installation tips. First off, after everything's been covered with a protective plastic membrane to prevent unexpected water seepage from entering the house, you should put down some roofing paper. Scratch that - lots of roofing paper. In fact, it needs to fill just about every bit of roofscape you can find, including the roof valleys (these are the spaces in between roof surfaces, which often resemble gutters). On top of that you'll need to lay a ridge cap, a preformed cover that fits over the roof's peak. The edges of this will be covered by your shingle, but it rounded apex will still peak out from the shingles, giving the roof it its essential character.

Now that that's all done, you're ready to start worrying about the shingles, or roof paneling. Ask around at the construction outlet or hardware store where you first procured your shingles and find someone that can demonstrate the manner in which the shingles need to be fitted together. If you haven't bought the materials yet, you should know that there are a bunch of companies that make panel solutions that are really easy to clip into place, designed for DIY standing-seam roof installation and requiring nothing but your hands and perhaps the most rudimentary assortment of tools. Check out the website of Permanent Roofing Systems (permanentroofing.com), where you'll find a PDF full of DIY metal roof installation tips available for download and instant reference.

If your roof is irregularly constructed - with features like skylights, dormers or chimneys - then you need to reconsider what your goal is in doing this job on your own. In such cases, pre-made shingles just aren't going to be enough to cover the entire roof surface. The irregular areas are going to require custom-cut shingles, and working with a saw and some chalk just isn't going to be enough. What's needed is hydraulic shear called a break, a portable device used by professionals to shape standing-seam panels on-site, a feat that would take a human ten times as long to replicate.

Should you attempt to do the job yourself, the most likely result will be a standing seam roof that either looks slapped together or else is easily damaged by leaking or swelling ice caught between panels. This is when the cost of DIY standing-seam roof installation can actually outstrip that of professionals - because you'll probably need to redo the entire job at some point.

If under such circumstances you persist in your DIY efforts, the odds are that patch jobs around irregular areas are either going to look bad or result in your standing-seam roof being compromised, leading to leaking and other forms of weather damage, such as the negative effects that swelling ice can cause when caught between panels. Properly installed standing-seam roofs are subject to warranties of up to fifty years, given the nigh-on invulnerable hardiness of the materials. So don't skimp now - a once-off investment could leave you with a roof that lasts a lifetime.

DIY help needed for a fence post?

It's not technically a "fence" post. It will be a metal post to secure a chain gate. The post will be 2-3" in diameter. I want the post to be approximately 48" above ground. The place where it's going in has some old asphalt and/or concrete, but it's old and worn down. I do need to remove the old post that broke off at ground level.

I'll be getting the post from a welding shop because I need to have eye bolts welded on for securing the chain.

You don't NEED to remove the old post. You could move the new hole to one side or the other. Aesthetics will determine this. If you don't mind the old post at ground level, then just leave it.

Getting the Best Wrinkle Creams to Use

Looking for the <a href=” http://www.bestantiwrinklefacecreams.com” target=”_blank”>best wrinkle creams </a>is made easy if you know the basics of buying one. One of the first things you need to ask yourself is why you need them. Do you need them out of necessity or do you simply want to have one to get into the fad of applying it on?<a href=” http://www.bestantiwrinklefacecreams.com” target=”_blank”> Wrinkle creams</a> are things that you will have to regularly apply on to your skin. So before buying one, it's best to check your reasons, lest you want to risk having it work for you on a negative manner.

Fact is, we really can't stop our skin from wrinkling. It happens as a result of age. As we add more years to our lives, we inevitably decrease our youth because our body also undergoes its own wear and tear process. Having skin wrinkles is a testament to the years we have gone through, creating, and engaging ourselves in various activities that make us who we are now.

There are two known natural causes that make our skin look wrinkled. One is that the hylauronic acid found in our skin eventually breaks down and therefore eliminates skin moisture. The other one is that elastin and collagen are produced much less than before. Both of these compounds are important in providing fullness beneath the skin and they also allow the skin to be more flexible and reshape its form despite being stretched out. Based from these two important reasons why the skin breaks down and becomes wrinkled, here's a practical list of tips you can use to avail of the best wrinkle creams.

Tip 1: See a doctor

Experiencing skin wrinkles may mean more than you initially thought of it. Fine lines are not expected to appear until you reach your 40s, so if you happen to get it when you are still in your 20s or 30s, it would be better if you consult your doctor. Generally, skin wrinkles can be due to hereditary reasons or brought about by toxins that get collected beneath the skin. Toxin can cause wrinkles because it absorbs and kills the necessary nutrients that facilitate cell repair.

Tip 2: Evaluate the ingredients

You should take time to read the label and do not just rely on testimonials and what the sales person keeps on telling you. Testimonials do not actually tell much especially if they are released by the very company of that product. The most important ingredients that are found in the best wrinkle creams are the coenzyme Q10, keratin, Cynergy TK, and Physsatance Wakame.

Tip 3: The price should be right

Availing the best wrinkle creams do not simply rely on what they are made of. Granted that they have the ingredients mentioned above, but does the product you are now eyeing have enough of these ingredients within them? Because the mentioned ingredients above are known to be highly useful in naturally eliminating skin wrinkles, experts advise that they be taken in high amounts. Don't worry though, because all of them are considered to be safe and non-toxic. So when buying wrinkle creams containing these products, evaluate the balance between the price and the amount of the anti-wrinkle ingredients it has. Ingredients should be at least 60% more than the safe enhancers found in the product.

Can you give me tips on making fresh cream for strawberry cake?

Can you guys give me tips on making fresh cream for cakes? Cause when i make em they dont taste like the fresh cream i know. And do you guys know any good sites with pictures of nice cakes?

all you have to do to make really great cream for your cakes is buy heavy whipping cream. Use one cup of heavy whipping cream and 2 tablespoons of sugar. put them both into a mixing bowl and use your electric mixer with the whisk attachment. start beating it on a lower speed and gradually increase the speed as you see the cream to thicken. soon you will be on the higher setting and when you are done you will have fluffy thick whipped cream. You may double the recipe if needed. You can also add a little bit of vanilla extract if you wish, a few drops should do. Good Luck!!!

Guitar Kids

Guitar for kids

Many children would love to know how to play the guitar as it's cool and trendy. In most cases, parents disallow their children from doing so due to the cost involved. Good news for those who are tight in their finances. You can consider buying a second hand children's electric guitar instead. In this article, we will have some useful tips for you to take note of while buying a used electric guitar for your kids.

1. It's absolutely necessary that you check every part of the instrument thoroughly before making the payment. Particularly ensure that the neck of the guitar is not twisted. The simplest way to do this is by checking the strings to see how closely they are being tied to the fret board. If the strings are tied too near the fret board and leaves a big gap in the middle means that the neck is warped. Playing a warped guitar can be quite difficult given that the positioning of the hand on the strings is hard.

2. Other than inspecting the neck of the guitar, we also have to check the front and back of the instrument. Spotting a few scratches on the instrument is common but if they get too deep, you will notice some large marks around the edges which indicate the instrument wasn't taken care of properly. Sad to say that sounds generated from such instruments would be muffled and unclear.

3. Lastly, check to see if the electric guitar can be plugged into an amplifier. If yes, what type of amplifier is recommended? An amplifier is required in order for the instrument to produce the best quality chords it possibly can.

Help me name my product! It's a learner guitar for kids! 10 Points for best name!?

For a school assignment I'm making a custom-built guitar for kids, based off a child sized electric guitar. Since its for kids it needs to have an appealing name, but I'm stuck :(

10 points for the best name! Original names, please.

A Day To Remember Guitar Book

I had played acoustic guitars almost since I could remember. A Day To Remember Guitar BookI had a great mate who lived just down the road from and we did everything together so when he announced he was going to learn to play guitar, naturally, I didn't want to be left out! We bought a couple of new guitars and practised hard together even on cold Winter's night we went to the local Laundrette to practise when our folks threw us out!......Yes, my enthusiasm has never waned all through my great hippy youth until today where I find myself living on a yacht in Australia with eight wonderful guitars at the dodgy age of fifty eight..I even still do a few gigs!

But I digress! no matter how many guitars I owned over the years...and I have owned a few...I always had a secret desire to build one for myself. I proudly imagined how I would lovingly carve it all out, inlay it with black Coral, turquoise, silver and glowing mother of pearl. But, whenever it came to the crunch I just didn't have the balls to actually get stuck in and get to grips with it.

What was wrong? I couldn't work it out. I had achieved many other things I had set out to do along my journey through life. I'd built a 43 foot yacht, for one thing. I had learned that in order to finish a project off was to tell every living soul I knew that I was going to do it...that way, I knew that later, when my enthusiasm flagged, I just had to see it through, if I didn't I would get the reputation as a bigmouth 'gonna be, wanna be" I secretly thought of it as my 'insurance policy! It really helped, for sure.

However, as much as I loved playing, my life took a big jolt when I finally went to see a great Aussie guy called Jeff Lang play at a concert in my home town. I sat enthralled, spun out, totally blown away at the rich, vibrant, cool whiny sound that seemed to leap from this amazingly shaped lap steel guitar.

It just did not seem possible that a guitar could sound so full, so haunting, so melodic, to tell you the truth, I was so overcome with it all, I felt tears run down my face I felt such a fool...Well, what a state to get in!It was a big crossroads in my guitar playing!

This incident never left me the same again... I wanted one of those Weissenborns so bad it hurt. I felt I couldn't face my other guitars again. I sulked, we didn't speak for some weeks.....but I gave in, had to I'd wanted a Taylor all my life...now I'd got it, wasn't I ever going to play it again? Something was different though...I wanted to play that bloody thing like I'd never wanted to play before, so I did, you'd better believe it. I dont even want to think about how long and how many hours it took me to start improving but I damn well did.

I've taken all this time to get around to the whole point of this article. I had got over the indecision that had haunted me...I couldn't afford two or three grand to buy a good lap steel. No way.
I luckily have a great friend in Luthier Kim Hancock of Tamborine Mountain in Queensland. Kim, a kind soul along with his two boys ( also fearsome luthiers) Dane and Sean, build guitars that are something else already established as amongst the best in the World market...

Kim was really encouraging and gave me my first secret, unwittingly. If you start it and stuff it up...so what? It's only a piece of wood, see what you did wrong, chuck it in the garbage and order another piece..simple! Then, do it right the second time!

The second secret came right on the back of the first one.! Dont let the project intimidate you...take control of it..you are the master, it is the subject.
The best secret of all came as I started to build ....I remembered the words during our conversation a few weeks before....Treat every stage of the build as a separate project. The back, the sides, the bridge, the headstock.. a separate project. See, thats a good secret, I reckon. That way you can see the build as lots of small projects instead of one big overwhelming monster......Hey and give yourself a reward every time you complete one of those stages..a beer, a lollypop, go splash out people, dont get cheap on yourselves!
The next secret is this: During the build there is always something that will stop you dead in your tracks. With me it was" How in Hell's bells am I ever going to get the back join perfect or the front one, come to mention it?"Well, my secret was in the fact that I had a good guitar making book supplied to me by Kim. The answer was in there! Glue some sandpaper to a straight edged spirit level and then sand each section smooth as a baby's bum...see, simple when you know how!

So, find your way round every problem by thinking about it carefully...there is always a way round each problem you encounter, it may not always be the way you had imagined! Oh, yeah, the name of the book is " A guitar Maker's manual by Jim Williams" You can get that from Kim Hancock's site
[http://www.Australian] Luthiers supplies.com.au Let me say though, there are no plans for a Weissenbourn in there, you can get those from StewMac in the U.S. or other suppliers.

The final secret is a real simple one: Make a firm decision to see it through to the end. I actually live on a yacht in a Marina.. I nearly talked myself out of building the guitar time and time again. I have heard so many times" How can I build a guitar when I havn't got a shed, a bench saw and so on?" BS people, BS with a capital BULL. Make the best of what you have, get your timber supplier to cut up the timber to size, then get it planed so you dont need all that expensive gear, Man,THEY got it all!

im a beginner so it doesnt need to be anything fancy. i heard daisy rock is good. thanks!!

Pay a little more and get something you can be proud of and will last a long time. A guitar is an instrument you grow with so get something that can help in that growth not stifle it

Don't expect to get a decent guitar for under $100.

Here's a good guitar for a little over that amount:
