Yes you can. All versions of the game since the orinigal GH have been able to do it, though it's not all that much fun. Wii controls are something like (when held in NES style)
Green = B
Red = D-Pad Left
Yellow = A
Blue = 1
Orange = 2
Whammy = shake
Star Power = D-Pad Up
