Tips on Collecting Hall of Fame Vintage Guitars
Ever thought that a guitar might be a more lucrative investment than the stock market? Vintage guitars are becoming a hot item in the collectibles market, and there are few icons more recognizable to Americans than a rock star and his guitar. While a few months' savings might have bought a guitar in the 1960s, some of those instruments are selling for big bucks today. Recently, George Harrison's guitar sold for a little under six hundred thousand dollars, for instance. Eric Clapton's favorite Stratocaster from the 1970s, Blackie, sold for nearly a million.
While celebrity collectibles have been a good investment for years, guitars themselves have largely been overlooked. However, the guitar was perfected between the 1930s and the 1960s, depending on the model, and instruments from this period are highly regarded. Some people think that in fifty to a hundred years, guitars from the mid 20th century will be thought of in the same way as violins and cellos from the 17th and 18th century.
The appeal of any guitar grows over time, and there hasn't yet been a period when the market sank. That makes a vintage guitar a great investment choice, as well as a visually and emotionally rewarding collectible. There's nothing like being able to say that you own the guitar once played by a legend.
Values only continue to go up, too. While a 1959 Fender Sunburst Stratocaster, one of the most famous types of guitar, originally cost about $250, it brought between eight and nine thousand dollars in 1997. Today, you might have to pay seventeen thousand for a model with a slab fingerboard.
Recent stock market unpredictability has meant that people are more interested in guitar collecting. These vintage instruments are a great type of protected investment. For collectors who want to cover all the bases, consider a varied collection - acoustic, electric, exotic, antique, vintage, contemporary and even custom guitars.
Over the past couple of years the vintage guitar market has taken a hit here and there but overall has proven to be a sound investment for most. The experts say that when inflation accelerates and the dollar shrinks collectibles prove to be a good place for your money.
There is a very limited supply and there still seems to be a high demand for these pieces of history which has proven to be a good choice for those who have invested in these instruments, such as the Gibson Les Pauls' and Fender Telecasters and Stratocaster's from the same era. (50's, 60, and 70's).
A good place to start collecting vintage guitars as an investment would be to focus your research on obtaining guitars from the list below. This list includes that have been inducted into Vintage Guitar Magazine's Hall of Fame. There are, of course, other lists and other guitars worth investing in, but this is certainly a great place to begin.
Over the past couple of years the vintage guitar market has taken a hit here and there but overall has proven to be a sound investment for most. The experts say that when inflation accelerates and the dollar shrinks collectibles prove to be a good place for your money.
You might be asking yourself whether a guitar can really be a good investment. After all, to the untrained eye, most guitars are the same. However, the right guitar can be worth a lot to a collector. Guitars that have been owned by celebrities, or which are rare or unusual, can command very high prices indeed. If you're worried about getting a return on your money, don't be. Vintage guitars have consistently performed with more stability than the stock market. There are a number of reasons that collecting vintage guitars is an excellent strategy.
For one, they're more tangible than a stock or bond. They give you an attractive piece to display, and are fun to collect, too. Guitars also don't lose value over time. In fact, it's just the opposite - vintage guitars consistently gain value as they get older, as long as you take the time to keep them in good condition. They're also usually superior instruments. If you're a musician as well as an investor, you'll appreciate the superior action and tone of a real vintage instrument. The most popular vintage guitar with collectors is probably the Gibson Les Paul.
Here is a small example: Let's say in 1959 you had $100.00 if you were to bury the $100.00 in a coffee can in your back yard or put it in your bank account and let it sit there drawing a couple percent interest inflation would slowly take this $100.00 and if you were to pull it out 50 years later you would find that $100.00 would barely get you a nice dinner for two. However if you would have taken that same $100.00 and gone to your local pawn shop in 1959 and picked up a 1959 Gibson Les Paul guitar and placed it in the closet instead then you could pull it out of your closet today and it could be worth well over six figures.
People are starting to realize how much these instruments from the 50's 60's, and 70's really meant to our culture.

Gibson SG Standard
Inducted in 2009
By 1960, declining sales of the Les Paul model had Gibson looking to revamp the guitar. So the company gave it a radically redesigned, much thinner (and lighter!) body intended to better compete with Fender's Strat. But the things that made up its very heart and soul - {especially|particularly|in particular} its humbucking pickups - remained. Today, the early-'60s version is a true classic.
Gibson Les Paul Model (Goldtop)
Inducted in 2008
Les Paul tried for years to convince Gibson it needed a solidbody in its line. Finally, Ted McCarty brought a single-cut {experiment|experimentation} guitar to Les for his approval. Though its origianl bridge/tailpiece was far from perfect, the instrument served as Gibson's test bed through the '50s. Eventually, it reached the pinnacle among guitars and today sits among the top collectibles.
Gibson J-45
Inducted in 2007
Martin's "dreadnought" flat-tops were big and dominated the guitar market of the 1930s. By the early '40s, Gibson knew it needed a big flat-top to compete, and he J-45 ("J" for Jumbo, "45" indicating its price in dollars) was it. A 16" round-shoulded flat-top, even in the tough times of its launch, it received a very warm welcome and has ever since remained one of - if not the - most popular Gibson guitars.
Fender Jaguar
Inducted in 2006
Jumping on the speeding Fender bandwagon in 1962, it helped the company stay on top throughout the decade, with its fancy new vibrato tailpiece, sophisticated electronics, and (usually) a funky custom color. If you played instrumental rock at the time, you either had one of these or you were probably ignored!
Gibson ES-5
Inducted in 2006
One of the first guitars built after Ted McCarty took charge of Gibson, it helped solidify the company's position as the world's preeminent electric archtop maker. Today, its late-'50s variant with three PAF humbuckers and Switchmaster tone control is one of the most collectible of its ilk.
National Tri-Cone series
Inducted in 2005
Its warm, sustaining tone emanates from three aluminum "resonators" designed to help guitarists stand out in big-band or orchestra settings. But, soon after being introduced, Nationals were adopted by Hawiian and blues players. Today, the Tri-Cone produces what many consider the ultimate acoustic blues tone.
PRS Custom
Inducted in 2004
The first production instrument from a company that has become the guitar's preeminent modern success story.
Gretsch White Falcon
Inducted in 2004
Like many great guitars, it has evolved through several versions. But it has been a classic since day one, for both it sound and utterly unique aesthetic.
The 1954-'56 Gibson Les Paul Custom
Inducted in 2003
Can you say "Black Beauty?" Though Gibson didn't give it the name, Les Paul himself chose black as the secondary color for the guitar bearing his moniker. Gibson did, however, use it to experiment with a three-pickup configuration and to introduce its {famed|celebrated|famous|renowned} Alnico-magnet pickup.
Fender Jazzmaster
Inducted in 2002
Designed and marketed by Leo to cut into Gibson's jazz market, it supplanted the Strat at the top of Fender's line in 1958. And though its sound kept it from catching on with jazzers, garage surf bands of the day ate it up. It is one of the most copied solidbody designs of all time.
Gibson SJ-200
Inducted in 2002
A landmark amongst acoustic flattops, the SJ-200 was designed for cowboy guitarist Ray Whitley, and any cowboy worth his salt played one. Its popularity carried over to other genres, and never faded. From its jumbo-sized, sunburst-finished body to its ultra-fancy pickguard, bridge, and headstock, it was considered the consummate flat-top. Just ask Emmylou!
Gibson ES-150
Inducted in 1999
Gibson's first electric Spanish guitar was also the first good-quality electric to hit the market. Favored by Charlie Christian, it housed Gibson's first pickup, which is still in high demand and considered a classic.
Martin D-45
Inducted in 1998
Originally the fanciest of Martin's {innovative|forward-looking} dreadnought line. If you had one of the 96 made in the 1930s and early '40s, your net worth would be considerably higher than it is now.
Rickenbacker 360/12
Inducted in 1997
It was good enough for George Harrison and gave us the "jingle jangle" of Roger McGuinn. That's more than enough for the 360/12 to be the only 12-string in the VG HoF.
Gibson Flying V
Inducted in 1996
One of the most distinct guitar designs ever created, but it wasn't a hit when it came out in 1958. Rock and rollers {discovered|observed} it the late '60s and the V still makes a unique statement today.
Gretsch 6120
Inducted in 1996
If you play rockabilly, you better have one of these! Introduced as the Chet Atkins Hollowbody in '54, the 6120 soon shed the "G" brand and western inlays of the early versions, but never lost the Western Orange finish or the cool twang.
Fender Jazz Bass
Inducted in 1995
With its two specially designed pickups, offset waist, and slimmer, narrower neck, the Jazz Bass was intended to be the more tonally {diverse|versatile}, slicker-playing descendant of the Precision. The fact it was available in Fender custom colors (often with matching headstock) makes it all the more cool.
Gibson L-5
Inducted in 1994
Introduced in 1922 and with a design guided by the legendary Lloyd Loar, the L-5 was the first modern archtop guitar. Initially a non-cutaway acoustic, the L-5 went through many changes, ultimately becoming a single-cutaway with two humbuckers.
D'Angelico New Yorker
Inducted in 1993
George Gruhn said of it in the March 2000 issue of Vintage Guitar, "The New Yorker is significant due to its superb quality and aesthetic artistic appeal," and is "one of the finest guitars in the history of the instrument."
Gibson Super 400
Inducted in 1993
Introduced in 1934, with its 18" body and deluxe features, the Super 400 was the largest and most expensive guitar in the Gibson line. Its influence was soon apparent in the designs of many of the great archtops built by others. Whether the earlier non-cutaway acoustic version or the later double-pickup cutaway, it remains a true work of art.
Fender Precision Bass
Inducted in 1992
The first bass in the VG Hall, and why not, it only forever revolutionized how the bass was played. One of the most innovative ideas in modern music history.
Gibson ES-335
Inducted in 1992
Born during Gibson's "golden era," the semi-hollow body ES-335 wedded archtop looks with solidbody performance. Whether it has dot inlays or blocks, it remains one of the coolest designs in guitardom.
Martin D-28
Inducted in 1991
The first acoustic in the VG Hall, the D-28 launched Martin's line of incredible big and loud dreadnoughts in 1931. The D-28 has inspired many guitarists and builders, and remains one of Martin's most popular models.
Fender Telecaster
Inducted in 1991
Leo Fender's timeless classic is about as simple as an electric guitar can be, but still has the magic to appeal to guitarists playing just about any style of music. Every guitar player has a Telecaster (or should). Along with the Strat and Les Paul, the Tele is among the most popular designs around.
Fender Stratocaster
Inducted in 1990
The VG Hall of Fame was started in 1990 and we had little doubt the Strat would be among the first instruments selected for inclusion by our readers. Three single-coils, a vibrato (usually), and that great contoured, offset-double-cutaway body. Some 50 years after its introduction, it is still one of the most popular designs.
Gibson Les Paul Standard ('Burst)
Inducted in 1990
Also an easy first-year selection, LP Standard was introduced with a sunburst finish in 1958, and the '58 to'60 models are the most valuable vintage solidbody guitars. The Les Paul Standard is a classic no matter what finish it bears.

Two Hot Tips for Bass Fishing
Recent years have seen an explosion of interest in Bass fishing and this has led to many new business sprouting up to ride along with the wave of excitement. Hooking, pardon the pun, new Bass anglers is easy. All you have to do is to invite them for a Bass fishing trip and before you know it, they are now passionate about the sport. Businesses seek out hot interests like a heat seeking missle and we see resorts, sports gears and fishing related things being built - all with the aim to capture this hot market. As a Bass angler, clearly we have benefited from all these interests.
Right now, more and more are getting their feet wet to learn and find out what the big bass buzz is all about. For the uninitiated, Bass fishing is more than just fishing. Having a prized big bass in your hands and the opportunity to show it off is a feeling that is hard to describe. Only those who have done it will know the feeling and once you have done it once, you want to do it over and over again. But after the first bass fishing expedition, for the beginner, there is still lots more to learn.
First, you have to know the lures that you must have to enjoy bass fishing.
What the top 3 lures for catching Bass? No real surveys have been conducted but it is generally agreed by pro bass fishermen that plastic worms makes the best lures, followed by the spinner bait and then the crank bait.
After considering the lures, there are still other factors to consider, chief of which is how you intend to cover the waters
in your fishing. Do you want to cover a smaller segment of water thoroughly or do you want to skim across a larger area as quickly as possible to find fishg. Worm baits are very effective and Bass are absolutely seduced by it. However, worm baits tend to be slower and are best in certain areas which will come with experience.
One main problem with learners fishing with a worm is that they do not realise that the worm does not have the ability to sense strikes. And the main reason for the inability to sense them is due to the fisherman using a sinker that is too heavy and a line that is too thick.
To overcome this predicament, a variable buoyancy worm using lead strip sinkers can be adopted. The advantages are:
• No moving lead on the line to dampen the feel of a gentle pickup
• Precise amount of lead can be applied to deliver the worm action needed
• Bass finds it easier to inhale the worm
• It helps in hook setting
• In snags, you can quickly shake yourself loose
• Worms can be hung virtually suspended over the bottom when fishing in shallow water.
To tell how much lead strip is needed, wrap one strip around the hook and bury the barb in the worm. Ease it into the water
and watch it sink, it should barely settle toward the bottom. If it sinks to fast, take some off, etc. Make sure to use no heavier than 8-pound mono line - preferably 6 pound.
How much lead strip do you need? Well, one tested way is to wrap one strip around the hook and bury the barb in the worm.
Now, gently ease it into the water and watch it sink. It should barely settle toward the bottom. If it sinks too fast, start
again by taking some off, etc. Use a mono line that is no heavier than 8-pounds - preferably 6 pound.
Spinner baits, by virture of its construction, can move more quickly across the surface. It can be bounced on the bottom,
against tree limbs and moved in many different ways in order to stimulate strikes. It is a great probing lure for the shoreline because of its tangle-free construction.
Lastly, Crank baits are great if you want to check out a spot without wasting too much time. They cover a lot of water in a hurrry and you can use them for locating fish that may be scattered.
The most important rule is this - make it easy for the Bass to get to the lure - no matter where you are fishing in. Drop that lure right in front of them! Scientists have proven that Bass can calculate the amount of energy it will take them to go after the prey and if they decide its too much effort, they won't bother.
The bottom line is this - discover and learn to use each type of lures and find what suits you. Once you find the right one for you, you will really find enjoyment in bass fishing!
Aside from considering the lures, the other important factor is to know the accurate time in going for bass fishing.
The Biggest Bass are definitely caught at dawn or dusk. Remember - bass love to prey at ambush spots, which seems to offer lots of cover for the baitfish. They like to hide, and then pounce on their prey.
These bait fish are most active in the dusk or dawn. When they feeding, the bait fish's guard is down and less aware of threats, So that is when the bass strikes. Fish during these times for the best chances of success.
When retrieving an underwater lure in poor light conditions, pull in the lure at a steady pace once it is set in motion. This makes it easier for bass to locate and grab it.
Although I mentioned that dawn or dusk is the best time to fish for bass, there is one exception. Don't bother trying when
the water is below 50 degrees Fahrenheit. This temperature causes certain aquatics species to disappear, which in turn, nullifies the food chain feeding.
Just by keeping these 2 factors in mind for bass fishing - lures and the time to fish - you are on your start to winning the
game of bass fishing. Once mastered, you can then consider other factors like water quality and weather conditions. Happy Bass fishing!
Upright Bass Pickup Homemade?
i play the upright bass for a rockabilly/blues band. for a pickup ive found a way to mount a dynamic mic on the body that points at the f-hole. it does the job, but not very good. i got a bunch of musical electronics lying around and i know theres gotta be a way to make an actual pickup from what i have, without spending any extra money. i have mics (dynamic, condenser and a PZM) as well as electric guitar pickups. are there any maguyvers out there that know how to cook something up? thanks
Most bass players I know just wrap a microphone (like a Shure SM-57) in a small towel and wedge under the tailpiece, against the belly of the instrument. It works to amplify the sound and gives a warm, natural acoustic sound.
I can't offer any MacGuyver-ish solutions, as I'm not at all electronically inclined but it seems to me you don't want to cut into the top of the bass to install a pickup, nor do you want anything like a solid-body electric bass guitar pickup because it won't give you that acoustic upright sound that's so important for rockabilly music. A 6-string electric guitar pickup wouldn't work either, IMO, as i don't think it would adequately pick up sounds in the bass range, no?
If I were you I would experiment with the mics I already have -- dynamic, condenser and PZM -- and with mic placement. Maybe there's a better place to mount the mic on the instrument, or a way to boost the signal from the mic with a pre-amp? Are you using a dedicated bass amp or running your mic signal directly into the mixing board? These are options to explore to see what gives you the best sound.

Enjoying Some Halibut Fishing Today
Love to fish; why not head out for some Halibut fishing this year. It's a great sport and one if you know some techniques you can increase your chances of catching a nice big halibut. In spring the Halibut love to sit closer to shore, it's where the food is that they will enjoy eating. But read on and get some great tips to use.
Using jigs to fish for Halibut is one of the things you should consider. These jigs come in many different sizes and shapes. The most popular choice of jig size would be 8 to 12 ounces. Though if you are fishing in more shallow water, use a bit smaller size. The hook should be on the upper part of the jig to avoid a snag near the bottom.
Add a piece of herring to a jig that is shaped like a herring, and your chances of getting a fish while halibut fishing should increase. Attracting Halibut will be the sound that jig will make when it hits the bottom, and also the smell of the bait. If they know there is food around, you will hopefully be bringing home your limit.
Normally you should stick with water that is around 80 to 180 feet deep, possibly moving once in a while to deeper water up to 300 feet deep. Also consider the use of a spreader bar on which you can place some herring to. Use treble hooks with this type of bait and test line of 40 to 80 pounds.
Halibut fishing should be done near the bottom of the area, or within five feet of the bottom. Move your jig after you've hit bottom, and lower it down slowly. You shouldn't be in much danger of losing the bait, since halibut fishing will done in sandy or gravel bottomed areas.
Most halibut fishing will be done where the bottom is gravel or sand, so not too often will you lose any equipment. After you've notice that a halibut has nibbled on your line, set the hook. You can do this by lifting up the rod; make sure you reel in the line at the same time. After you've made sure the halibut is hooked make sure you pump the rod and keep that line tight.
Once the halibut gets close to the top you will experience a strong run. Have your equipment drag set for that, and get ready for them to dive. You should also have a gaff hook and harpoon on board to help bring in the fish. A harpoon can have line on the end of it, just watch for it to come back up, and start bringing the halibut in again.
Think about bleeding them before you get them on the boat it will help them taste better. Good luck for your halibut fishing.

NFL Merchandise For The Upcoming Season
The upcoming NFL season is sure to inspire pro football fans and inspire NFL Merchandise manufacturers to create some colorful, new and fun NFL fanwear. If you're an NFL fan, you've no doubt seen fan wear including banners, hats and masks at your NFL stadium's fanwear merchandise store. You may have even purchased some of it. Serious fans pass by the junk however to get the fanwear everyone notices. Why because the cheap unofficial gear falls apart and just looks bad. Authenticity is important to football fans.
Dedication by fans to their local National League Football teams is an interesting cultural phenomenon that isn't even rivaled by European soccer fanatics. The fact that their on-field heroes are adorned in uniforms with helmets emblazoned with team logos might have something to do with NFL fan's insatiable demand for NFL fan merchandise. Another reason is that people want to have an event, even a party event to go to on the weekend. Sunday is normally a pretty quiet, uneventful day and that just doesn't suit many sports fans. A Sunday afternoon is the perfect time for friends to gather and root for their home team.
Millions of fanatics and US football fans watch their favorite teams play every Sunday afternoon. It brings people to local bars and to parent's homes. It's the perfect excuse for socializing. The social part of NFL game watching is a big part of it too.
If you're not that much of a fan and you're wondering if anyone buys all the hats, wigs, sponge fingers, and jerseys, you should know that NFL fan merchandise is very popular. Fans fill their recreation rooms with footballs, bobblehead dolls, game masks, wigs, banners, mugs and posters. And kids love this stuff for their bedrooms.
Few kids will sit through a 3-hour football telecast, but when Dads and their kids can share something for a short time, that shared spirit brings them together. The fact they're rooting for the same team makes them feel closer. Kids learn something about the spirit of a community and the sharing of common hopes. In a world of war and televised mayhem and tragedy, kids can be more concerned about someone completing a pass and making a touchdown. Whether for glory or not, kids get to aspire to something beyond themselves and their daily routine.
NFL merchandises such as game masks and hats represent their belief in a common dream. It might be winning, or it could be just improving, but we can all relate to it. That's why Sunday afternoon football is hard to ignore and why some football fanatics can't get enough of it.
For kids and teens, an official logo'd item of NFL merchandise is still a status item. Of course, when it's worn to an NFL game, it's a demonstration of the home team spirit. Win or lose, these fans love their team and all it represents. When you get down to it, the NFL team simply represents the city or community. Or it might go beyond that. If you're wearing a Dallas Cowboy hat or fan face, it might represent the spirit of America or perhaps that the Cowboys are a successful team. Fans still cheer for the underdogs but you'll see more hats, wigs and masks with the NFL's top teams. Some cities have fans that are a cut above the rest. New York Jets fans for instance show very strong loyalty to their team even though they don't win the Superbowl or play in it. That shows you there is something beyond winning that makes these fans so spirited. When it comes to NFL culture, you're going to see some real dedication to the football experience in New York. In the mid west, you'll also see strong support for the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears.
So, what if you're a fan and you want to show a little more spirited support for the local team? There are some great online retail stores that offer a good selection of authentic logo NFL merchandise.
NFL merchandise can be divided into two categories: wearables and non-wearables. A wearable piece of merchandise would include a hat, mask, wig or jersey. A non-wearable would be a mug, cup, bobblehead dolls, football, or window shade for a car window.
Some of the best wearable items are the fan masks. These are made of a soft pliable rubber and there's a headband to keep it on securely. Fan wigs are perhaps the most zany. Here, you've got an item that might keep your head warmer than without. Fan face rally caps are another item that fuses a rally cap baseball hat with a colorful mask. They have a fleece headband that has crazy team-colored hair attached to it and each has an officially licensed embroidered team name and logo.
For kids, you can get a youth football outfit. They come complete with a plastic helmet, padded shoulder pads, a football jersey and pants. These youth football outfit kits come with iron numbers so your child can pretend he's his favorite player on the NFL team. Kids love these outfits. They can wear them as pajamas or even as Kids Halloween costumes.
This season, don't sit on the sidelines when the game is on. Get into the spirit of the 2006 football season and get your official logo NFL merchandise. Whether for display or for wearing, they'll lift the spirit of your football party or at the game.
how to achieve top class guitar sound?
please can anyone help me to simply achieve a good clean rhythm and overdrive status quo type sound using my fender telecaster guitar, just 2 sounds, I have a 3 piece band comprising of keyboards and live drummer, so i`m not looking for an overdrive sound like metallica that will totally drown out the band
take into account bryan adams and status quo, I have spent so much money on pedals and amps and different type strings and still every night on stage with a different sound, and it`s beginning to drive me crazy, just lately i purchased the line 6 guitar pod 2 and doing a bit of messing around with this but still not getting the sound i want, the closest i got to an overdrive was using the boss ds-1 pedal but still not happy with this, I do not use any amp on stage just plug directly to the house mixer, is this where i`m going wrong ? so please can anyone guide me on the right track and give me some ideas of how you set your guitar sound and equipment used
I dare say it is very hard to get that type of clean "going into break up" sound by doing it the way you do now. I have tried several similar set ups (and use it from time to time). However, the only sounds I can get to be OK are the absolute clean ones or the distorted ones.
What will get you there faster than you can say "tube" is a real tube amp. Don't need the large monsters, just a small decent combo, which you'll then mike as usual through the PA. Look up the smaller amps from Blackheart (US) or Blackstar (UK) or similar. These give you real tube tone to die for at an affordable price.
There are two ways to get to the two-tone "thing". You can turn the amp into saturation and then turn down on your guitar to clean up the signal. Very pro and common. Or, you can put a good drive pedal (like a TS 808 tube sceamer) in front of a tube amp and push it into overdrive - also a slick solution.
In either case, both will get you a tone that is way, way better than any simulation or modelling stuff can hope to achieve. Don't get me wrong, I use the pod type of set up too (when we do cover band stuff I use it all the time), but this other way can not be copied - at least not yet.
Just look at the live or studio work of the artists you mention. You will always see at least one tube/valve amp cooking behind them, Fender, Marshall, Vox, Orange, Cornford, Dr. Z, Hiwatt, Matchless, Mesa Boogie and so on... This is not because they are being tone snobs (well, some may be) - it is because it delivers the best tone.
Good luck on your tone quest! Oh and if you insist on going the modelling route, then I think the Line 6 Vetta is the best there is.
