What Does an AV Receiver Do?

The surround sound receiver is an important piece of equipment that is more commonly referred to as the AV receiver. AV in this particular instance refers to audio and video. In other words, the receiver receives all this information and then plays traffic cop directing it where it should go. If you purchase an all in one sort of AV receiver you will notice that in addition to conducting traffic this particular tool wears many hats when it comes to effectively running your home theater or surround sound system.

The receiver functions in the capacity of a switch for all audio and visual information that comes into your home theater system. This device takes all the source information and data and literally switches (or translates if you will) that data into pictures and sound.  Without something to operate in this capacity it would be impossible to have a home theater system as the information couldn't be properly filtered and translated into the areas in which it needs to go.

Surround decoding is yet another task that the AV receiver performs with grace. Surround sound is encoded onto the discs that we play in our theater or sound equipment. The most common type of encoding is designed for 5.1 channel surround sound systems such as Dolby Digital or DTS receivers. There are others that exist but the vast majority of DVDs are designed and encoded for the above mentioned 5.1 channel systems.

As if these weren't enough the AV receiver also works in the capacity of a signal processor. Common signals that are processed by the receiver are the following: THX post-processing, bass management, digital audio decoding, and simulated soundfields. If at all possible and budget friendly to do so you should really take the effort to find an AV receiver that is THX certified. The requirements to meet the minimal certification standards make a system that meets those standards an excellent investment for your home theater or surround sound needs.

Amplification is yet another of the many tasks performed regularly by your AV receiver. This is an important task to your surround sound and the overall 'theatrical' experience of viewing movies on your home theater. You will probably be wise to check with your retailer about how much amplification you actually need in your home theater, as there are many mitigating factors that affect that number. Among some of the mitigating factors are: ceiling height, square footage of the room, flooring material and other things as well). While more power is good in most situations there are times when it is simply too much for your system to handle. This is one reason that many people opt to buy ready-made box kits for their surround sound and home theater needs.

Last but certainly not least, the AV receiver actually works as a tuner for AM/FM radio. Don't be too shocked and awed by all the jobs that this one little device does, just remember this when you see the sticker price and think to yourself how much more you would pay if you were buying a separate device for each of these functions. We should all be grateful to the person who invented this particular contraption and be glad to pay the price we are paying for the amazing sound that is produced.

How do I add dept to the sound of my deck?

OK, so I have a decent pionner deck (stereo sound, or 2.0), crossover, subs, mids and high, each one with their apropiate ampifiers but, I want all the sounds to blend, I want to add dept to the music, like if you were in a concert hall, where you can hear every instrument independently, not the bass from the back or the highs from my pillars. Have you ever tried the bose triport headphone, I whant it to sound like that, just in my car.
I heard there are componments called digitalizators, processors, and bass processor.
School me on tecniques, types of componments, brands or anything that can help me turn my stereo sound into something more live like. I don't need an epicenter since I got plenty of bass and I don't want to change my head unit.

The imaging will depend a lot on the positions of the speakers, is better to use component speakers.

Active Safety - A Little Help From Your Electronic Friends

It started out simple enough. Historians may argue the chronology, but "Active Safety" likely began with the "horn," an effective way to alert the guy ahead of you that you might run into him if he doesn't move. Then someone came up with the idea of something called a "turn signal" to let other drivers know which way you were thinking of going. That led to another great idea, "brake lights" that let the guy behind you know you were slowing down.

Active safety has mushroomed ever since. Much of the safety technology developed over the past 50 years has focused on protecting people in a crash -- reacting to an impact with passive safety technology like seat belts and airbags. The future of active safety seeks to help prevent accidents in ways the inventor of the horn never imagined.

One of the most common active safety systems widely used today is anti-lock braking. Anti-lock braking senses impending wheel lock-up and pulses the brakes many times a second -- faster than most humans could -- allowing drivers to maintain steering control under severe braking conditions. The brake controllers for ABS also enable traction control and dynamic stability systems; the three lie at the heart of most near-term active safety systems. Among these systems are sensors that monitor the angle of the steering wheel, the front wheels and the vehicle itself; the speed at which each wheel is turning; the engine speed; and, in some cases, how hard the driver is hitting the brakes. The electronic components process this information in milliseconds and take corrective action to assist the driver.

This is where we are today, but the technology that will soon be available to consumers will take active safety to another level. The elements of adaptive cruise control and steer-by-wire will be added, and radar might sense impending collisions and either warn the driver or enable the vehicle to take evasive action itself.

With steer-by-wire and active suspension, the vehicle can correct oversteer or understeer with brakes, the engine, steering and perhaps shocks. This is also referred to as integrated chassis control, which uses not just the brakes but also the steering, engine and other systems within the chassis. In essence, the active suspension system analyzes what the driver is asking the vehicle to do and decides how best to achieve that result. In other words, it would be much harder for a driver to lose control of a vehicle if an active safety system could steer to counteract unwanted turning in a braking maneuver. While the system would take input from the driver's controls -- the steering wheel, brake pedal and accelerator pedal -- it could just as easily take commands from outside the vehicle, perhaps from an intelligent highway system.

Suppliers and engineers believe that integrated chassis control could become commonplace in 10 years. The leading edge of this technology is an enhanced handling system called active roll control. The system uses hydraulic input from the steering system to actuate hydraulic cylinders in the front and rear sway bars so they resist leaning when the vehicle turns or follows a curve. Currently, rollover sensors are available to help indicate if a rollover is imminent. The sensor assesses the vehicle's inclination and in conjunction with other inputs, such as vehicle speed and lateral acceleration, warns of extreme inclination or the potential for vehicle rollover.

Also well along the development cycle is adaptive cruise control, also known as intelligent cruise control or smart cruise control, a system that is already in production. One such system features a single radar unit both mid- and long-range capability. The system's processor is contained in the same box as the radar, and the entire unit is hidden behind the front grill. The radar looks forward, while the processor interprets the distance to the vehicle ahead. If the car ahead gets too close (a pre-determined limit entered by the driver), the processor sends a command to the engine controller to slow the engine; and if that's not enough, it sends a command to apply the brakes.

Collision avoidance systems may evolve from adaptive cruise control by adding short-range radar to the front and side. This would work in tandem with a panic brake-assist system currently available. This system measures master-cylinder pressure; if it detects a very rapid application of the brake pedal, it uses the motor pumps from the traction control or dynamic stability control system to build brake pressure at the wheels faster than the driver could manage alone.

Automotive suppliers are looking not only at radar, laser and infrared for collision warning and collision avoidance systems, but also at optical systems - cameras which collect data that is interpreted by a computer rather than driver-displayed. Both optical sensors and angular-rate sensors determine whether there's an obstacle in a vehicle's path. That's the easy part. The challenge becomes understanding the vehicle's intended path, particularly when that path involves a curve in the road. Once the system recognizes that the vehicle is going around a curve, it would be able to determine whether an object is actually in the vehicle's path. An intelligent system that can tell the road is curving will know that a car that looks like it's directly in front is really in another lane.

Increasingly sophisticated advances in active safety will continue to blossom over the next decade, including stop-and-go cruise control, pre-crash sensing, forward collision warning, side and rear blind spot detection and lane change warnings. The more pieces of active safety that are fitted together, the closer the industry comes to being able to turn over control of a car to an on-board or off-board computer in emergency situations, on "smart" high-speed lanes of crowded highways or perhaps even full time during regular driving conditions. Of course, that much automated control could eventually become a "hot potato." The concern is likely to be whether drivers and buyers are ready for it. The fact is, automakers aren't going to spring entire active safety systems on the public all at once. As is already the case, the ingredients will be added gradually, piece by piece.

Digital Room Correction with Digital Signal Processor (DSP)

The Problem

Mother nature gave us a lot of gifts, but a perfect acoustic space wasn't one of them!

Put it simply, acoustic theories are very complex to analyze, model and unless your room was designed by a world famous acoustician, it will always be an uphill battle against the laws of phisics. While a certain amount of audio filtering; also called room correction can help to perfect the audio performance, achieving flat frequency response by boosting the signal at certain frequencies will only solve the issue if problems are not time dependant (see more below). Of course, quality of your loudspeakers, amplifiers and any other devices on the audio chain matters, but in the end acoustic theories trump. Following this little disclaimer, let's have a look at what DSP board can do for you.

Let’s take as an example the Hifi system of a living room illustrated in the below picture.

Many elements will affect quality of the audio system, such as:

•    The window that won’t absorb acoustic energy and will most likely reflect lots of high frequency energy from the left speaker
•    The imperfect free field frequency response of your loudspeaker system
•    The asymmetrical room layout which will affect the stereo field
•    Or simply the listener’s position by the sofa. So close to the back wall, he will most likely experience more low frequency than he should from the so-called standing waves. All together, the end result is an imperfect acoustic space where even the best Hifi audio system will hardly produce a flat frequency response.

How MiniDSP kits can help?

So besides taking down walls, moving your sofa around the room 5 times or considering changing the color of your speaker cable, there are few tricks which can help you improve the overall system performance. Digital audio processors like our MiniDSP Kit are one of them. Thanks to their configuration flexibility, they provide a low cost option to configure audio filters, equalizers and signal monitoring from a simple software interface. However note that there is a limit to how much digital signal processing can solve acoustic issues. In particular, equalization will only solve amplitude related issues. While room modes and other comb filtering (cancelations of waves) issues will require either time alignement or acoustic treatment.

What miniDSP can do, is provide you with a set of filters to easily improve the performance of your speaker system:
•    Graphic equalizer: This bank of filters will  increase or decrease the signal at a specific frequency. Depending of the MiniDSP firmware configuration, you may have 31 bands (also called 1/3 octave) or 15 bands (2/3 octave) available. By boosting/dampening the signal at certain frequencies, speaker equalization is the most common tool for system tuning
•    Parametric equalizer: Similar to the graphic equalizer, but this time with only a limited number of equalization bands that can easily be configured to better fit the needs of the application.
•    Delay: In order for loudspeakers to produce constructive wave front  and prevent as much comb-filtering effect as possible, time alignement of different loudspeaker are typically required. The delay blocks will also come handy in digital crossover applications.

So to summarize this application note, flat frequency response of a system will not happen by the magic of a DSP (no matter which brand it is). However, what our boards can do is help you improve the speaker equalization by boosting/dampening few specific frequencies your enclosure + driver combo may not be able to reproduce.

Our kits are also the perfect fit when it comes to digital crossovers. With their small form factor, one can easily place the board inside the enclosure of active loudspeakers. Hope this makes sense and send us an email if you have some comments to add.

In which order do I hook up my signal processor to my mixer?

I got a graphics EQ, a noise gate, and an inhancer that i must hook up as well

It depends on ur board? how many sends/outputs u have to work with. Be a little more specific.

Build Your Own Recording Studio

Building a music room or recording studio in your home can be a great investment to increase the value of your home, even if you aren't a musician.

Whether you are a musician, aspiring to be one or just have an appreciation of the art, building a recording studio or music room can be a rewarding experience…and a sound investment. A word of warning though, go about it slowly. Certain parts of your home studio will be easier to upgrade over time than others, so plan out what you're going to do before you start hanging foam and running cables.

For home studios you don't have to buy huge mixing consoles, expensive multi-track recorders, outboard processors, D-to-A converters or any of that other gear that you may not be unaware of anyway. These days you can scrimp down on those major expenses and focus on these main components: software, computers, interfaces, microphones and soundproofing.

Digital Audio Workstations, or DAWs, are recording software that get rid of the need for outboard mixing consoles. DAW's have the least impact on the final sound of your recordings but they are the component you will interact with the most, so ease of use is your primary concern. Pro-Tools by Avid is the industry standard but it is the least intuitive and the most proprietary, not to mention the most expensive. Other options like Cubase by Steinburg, Sonar by Cakewalk, and Logic by Apple have the same features as ProTools but tend to be easier to use. Demo versions of all of these programs are available online so feel free to try before you buy.

Computers for a home studio have to have good processing speed and LOTS of memory. There are a lot of opinions about weather PCs or Macs make better platforms for a home studio. The PC is upgradeable, but the Mac is not, so you can save on the purchase with the PC and the upgrades as opposed to having to buy another Mac with a bigger hard drive. However with Macs, you don't have to worry about viruses and worms like you do with a PC. Once again I think this comes down to ease of use. The best guideline is to work with what you know.

The sound interface converts the analog signal from a microphone and instrument cable into digital information that your computer records. Most interfaces can plug into your computer via USB but some require you to install a dedicated sound card. With interfaces you want to consider how you are going to use it. If you want to do a lot of live recording then you need an interface with lots of inputs. If you are going to go record one instrument at a time then you only need one or two inputs. Avid, Presonus and MOTU offer larger and smaller options and recording forums all over the internet are replete with suggestions as to which are the best.

Microphones are important because they impact how faithfully you capture sounds. Condenser mics are good for recording quieter sounds like acoustic instruments and vocals while dynamic microphones are better for louder sounds like guitar amps and drums. Companies like Sure, MXL, and AUDIX have microphones that range from cheap to absurd. It's okay to start out with cheaper mics but the general rule of thumb with mics is you get what you pay for, so be prepared to upgrade as you go.

Acoustic treatment has a huge impact on both the sound of your studio and the ambiance as well. Reverberant sound waves are a home studios number one enemy so you want to make it impossible for sound waves to bounce directly off flat surfaces, like walls, windows and ceilings. The best plan is to use a combination of absorption and diffusion. Diffusers redirect sound waves and are a useful way to keep some of your room's natural ambiance. And they look really cool, too; most of them remind me of that opera house in Australia. Absorbers do just that: they absorb sound waves. You can choose sound foam (which kind of looks like space age egg cartons), acoustic panels or baffles (glorified blankets); they all accomplish more or less the same thing so your choice should be based on your budget and the overall look you are going for. Just remember that acoustic treatment is difficult to hang, so be certain of your choices and placement before you start.

A home recording studio can be a great project to take on after you have finished decking out your home entertainment system. Building your recording studio in your home will take a little time, but it will be worth it when you can record your own music and spare yourself from paying someone else an outrageous amount of money to record something that you "might" like.

What Recording Equipments do I need?

I've been trying to find answers for about 2 weeks, but I'm not sure of what I need to make the audio sound really good, or if it's just for those professional ultimate studio qualities.
I want really good quality, but not extreme to the max, just really good.
I came to the choice of choosing these equipments for my studio setup:
audio interface(crappy onboard soundcard, prefers audio interface box)
mixer
microphone preamp(people say mixer pre amp are crappy)
Studio Monitor
Microphone
Headphone
Cables, Stands

-But here's the problem, I don't know what audio processors such as equalizers, compressors, and other stuff I need. Idk if I need a headphone preamp too, a monitor control, signal processor, audio converter.

So please and thankyou, what else do I need?

People will stop answering your questions, simply because you are being annoying. Asking the same questions week after week, makes one think if you really need any help at all.

You'll get mixed answers on the internet. It's the internet. Anyone can answer your questions, professional or not.

Simply put, there are multiple ways to get quality sound. And NO you are not going to get ultimate quality like the profesional studios without using the very nice equipment and software.

So.....

An Audio Inteface does not have an onboard soundcard. It is simply an interface that takes an input signal and transfers it to your computer via usb or firewire.

Mixer - You don't need this unless you need mixing capabilites. Which is mostly for LIVE uses. You don't need to tweak the EQ of each channel or send / receive different signals to different channels, because you can do all this in a Recording software.

Microphone Preamp - YES it's ideal to get one. The Preamps in a Mixer or Audio Interface are by far NOT top of the line. BUT it always depends on your BUDGET.

Studio Monitor - SURE if you want accurate mixes these do not hurt. Headphones can work as well.

Microphone - Rode, Neumann, Shure, and AKG are all very popular in studios.

Yes EQ's, Compressors are just like PREAMPS. If you can afford a studio rack setup THEN get them. If not, use the tweaks in your recording software to do this. They all have filters to do this for you.

ALSO call a damn representative at a Music Store if you aren't going to trust answers you get on Y!A.

Processor Pedal

What is better (for a guitar) an effects processor or pedal?

A processor can do many more effects but can be more expensive. A pedal is very good at one effect but thats usually all it can do. A processor can also have things like a tuner or metronome. I personally have a digitech rp250 processor. It is digital so i can record music on my computer.
