Red Quilt

Quilts from Art Auctions

I’ve been traveling throughout California attending art auctions looking for unique quilts.  I have had a lot of success.  I have found so many quilts that you could tell were filled with thousands of hours of careful planning and stitching.

I was attending at art auction in Orange and found a wonderful quilt.  The quilt was from the Civil War era and was made in the design of Blazing Stars.  There was a wonderful appliqued red and green swag-like border.  The center of the quilt has a feathered heart hand quilted.

The art auction that I went to in San Bruno had a fabulous quilt that was made in the 1860s.  The quilt was hand appliqued using cheddar, red and green cotton solid fabrics.  The background was white and the border has a meandering flowering vine.  It was truly special.

I found a great quilt that was made in 1894 while I was at an art auction in Rancho Cucamonga.  The style of the quilt was really fun.  It was called a Victorian Crazy Quilt.  There was so much elaborate hand embroidery over every seam and within the blocks, it was magnificent.

I was on vacation in Napa and attended an art auction that had several really nice quilts.  The one that I won was made in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and was completed in the 1870s.  I like the design called Ocean Waves.  The chain had earth green and chocolate brown triangles that were pieced with exceedingly fine skill and precision.  The border and background color was warm, cadmium orange.

The quilt I found at an art auction in Paradise was an 1840's thin, cotton Quaker quilt, which measures 108" x 88" and had 10 stitches per inch.  It was a Quaker cotton wedding quilt.  The top border, near the pillows, had a blue print and each side and the bottom had wide borders with North Carolina Quilt blocks in each corner. There were two rows of North Carolina Lilies in the center, and one row on each side facing outward.

The quilt made its way into the art auction because someone made the decision to sell some of the great historic heirlooms that were passed down through her family to her.  I was very fortunate to acquire this heirloom that had passed through the many generations of Quaker families.  Now I own one of the great Pennsylvania Quaker masterpieces.

Log cabin quilts are a design that I have always liked.  My grandmother made a quilt using this design for me when I was twelve.  I found one made in a similar fashion at an art auction Los Gatos.  The quilt was made in the 1870s and was made by Mennonites.

I was lucky to find the art auction, it was difficult to find.  The quilt is just fantastic.  The light and dark design of this quilt has a red center on one side with two green bars, two cinnamon bars and two blue bars and then two red bars and on the other side of the red square in the center are two yellows, two black and white stripe, two lovely Lancaster blue bars, and two peppermint stripe bars.

There was an art auction in Huntington Beach that advertised quilts and I was really happy with the pieces that I found there.  The quilt that I bought had a pictorial motif, like an album quilt, with a lot of interesting designs.  Each block was quite different and special.

im interested in quilt making now!!?

i am now interested in making a quilt for my daughter. i got inspired by typing in aqua and red quilts and i found this..

http://thejanellewindcollection.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/2007/11/25/fabric.jpg

and i LOVE the polka dot fabrics. do you know where i could get the same red with white polka dots and the aqua with white polka dots online? thanks!! other red and aqua fabrics you know of would be accepted too thanks!!

There is a website called Spoonflower. You can find a lot of fabrics there. If you don't find it you can design it and they will print it on your choice of cloth for you.

Quilting as an Income Source

Quilting is a very exciting craft that has an immensely rich history and is currently such a popular art that they are many different things that you can do to earn money from quilting. The world of quilting has always been popular and even more so today with rich patterns, quilting lessons online and more! The first step to making the money with quilting is to join a Quilting Bee or Quilting Guild and become involved in the quilting community.

Quilting Patterns

Quilting patterns are the rage today. Never before have so many different patterns been available to quilters. Instead of the traditional quilts for beds and wall hangings, quilters are finding all kinds of uses for quilting. Project sizes range from small table coverings to huge quilts for beds or wall hangings and from pieced quilts to copies of portraits.

Now, you can take advantage of your quilting skills and create beautiful new patterns. You can use a color wheel to suggest fabrics and color combinations. Patterns should be detailed and well written so that quilters can easily use them. You can even utilize the fabric calculator to let buyers know just how much fabric they will need for the patterns you design. Places to market quilting patterns include: online auctions, Ecommerce sites, local fabric stores, quilt shows and flea markets.

Instruct Quilting Classes

There is a large demand for quilting classes since the popularity of quilting is increasing so much. There can be a great deal of money to be made by offering quilting classes in your community. The first step would be to watch some quilting classes online such as with Lucy at the Quilting Resource Center. You will be able to see how to instruct a class to give your students helpful information but at the same time be entertaining.

Viewing quilting classes will give you an idea of what types of topics to teach in your community. You can contact your local library, community centers and quilting guilds to offer your teaching services. Quilting classes are a great way to make friends in the community while sharing the skills for this wonderful craft.

Quilting for Others

There is a huge market in the metropolitan areas for good longarmers who have the machine and are willing to quilt for others to earn income. If you're able to do this, check with your local quilt shops and ask how much they pay for longarm quilters. Most shops complete the quilt tops and send them out to be quilted.

Quilting Product Reviews

There are many product review sites on the Internet. These sites ask that you review a product, rate it and tell how much you paid for the item. Quilting products such as threads, fabric brands, sewing machines, needles, footers and more can be reviewed. Once you write a review, you submit it to the product review sites to earn additional money.

Quilting Photography

Quilting photography is also on the rise. People love looking at photos of quilts. Additionally, quilt photos are a terrific way to pass down family heritage and create quilt portfolios for quilts that have been sold. If you have talent for photography and framing, there are many people that would pay for you to create a quilting portfolio for them. You should inquire with the Quilting Bees in your community.

Summing It Up

There are many ways for making money with quilting. To succeed in making money for quilting it is important to learn all that you can about quilting from the Quilting Resource Center or other places on the Internet and at your local Quilting Bees or Guilds. Connecting with others will develop a strong community and professional network and help provide the income you're seeking through your quilting craft.

Has anyone ever used a serger to make the top of a quilt/comforter? I usually use my regular sewing machine.?

I want to try a serger because I think that would lay nicer and maybe even look better.
After I sew the squares together then I put a blanket/batting in the middle and a sheet on the bottom. Then I tie them together.
I'm going to the store tomorrow to buy one, so if anyone has done this and it turned out nice please let me know. Thanks

Practice using the serger first. Get accustomed to the width of the stitching, and stitch length.

Practice serging without the knife cutting the fabric - blade engaged. If you disengage the blade there will be no cutting of the fabric, but if the fabric is too close to the right edge of the face plate, the fabric will roll and the seam will not be flat.

Start by opening the manual and laying it next to the serger. Read and apply each step of every feature of the serger.

Threading the serger is the most challenging step in using this machine.

Thread antenna and presser foot up and tension setting a zero before threading.

Turn the handwheel so the loopers are at their highest position (there may be a mark on the handwheel and side of the serger for aligning).

Thread from right to left, needles last.

Lower the presser foot and set the tension to about mid-range or what the manual recommends.

Stitch a chain to make sure the threading was done correctly.

Test the different stitch settings with a folded scrap of fabric.

Don't run out of thread, or when changing the thread cones, cut the thread near the cone and tie off with the new thread - check the knot so it does not come apart. Lift the presser foot, open the tensions and gently pull the new thread through, under the presser foot and toward the back of the serger.

You will not be wasting thread with this "tying off" method. Instead, you will be saving on aspirin for the headache threading a serger can bring on.

I piece the blocks. Then layer: top face up, then the backing, face down, then the batting.

I serge around the perimeter of the quilt, leaving a 8" opening for turning. Serge straight off each end for a sharper corner.

Turn the quilt inside out. Press well, slip stitch the opening close or use "steam a seam" iron-on fusible strips, then top stitch.

I do not tie, I stitch in the ditch with a walking foot.

Sheets are not recommended as the weave is very tight and difficult to stitch. The needle(s) will make a loud noise as it penetrates the weave.

Make Your Bedroom A Haven

Is your bedroom a haven - a sanctuary where you can rest and rejuvenate? If not, here are some suggestions for making your bedroom into the room that provides peace of mind along with bodily comfort.

Your bedroom reflects who you are. So the first question is, how do you see yourself? Imagine yourself in different settings. Does traditional furniture - classic Queen Anne, Chippendale, 18th and 19th century European antique styles - give you a feeling of stability and continuity? A canopy or sleigh bed in rich cherry or mahogany, with Pachabel playing on the stereo hidden in your carved armoire, may be the perfect romantic touch you've been seeking.

Perhaps the setting that makes you feel warm and cozy comes from country furniture - the rough-hewn rustic look or the distressed finishes of cottage styles. Homey fabrics, like chintz, linen or denim, and accessories like handmade quilts, needlework pillows, rag rugs, and framed watercolors with outdoor themes may support your vision of the perfect place to relax and get a good night's sleep.

The casual contemporary look leans towards light glowing woods like maple or dramatic pieces in dark stains like espresso. Clean lines on popular styles, such as Mission furniture, make for a sophisticated yet warm space. Japanese prints on the wall and flower arrangements in colored glass vases may make this your favorite room in the house.

One step beyond contemporary is the look of modern furniture for those who love the linear design of retro, Art Deco, or an eclectic mix of styles. Fabrics are simple, and leather pieces work well. A lacquered platform bed and low sleek pieces can mix well with bold colors and richly patterned rugs or bedding, or show off a collection of black-and-white photographs on the wall.

Whatever style calls your name, ambient lighting in a bedroom enhances the mood. Put a dimmer switch on the main light in the room, or think about lamps that goes on and off to a clap of your hands. Have at least one bright light if you have a "work" corner in the bedroom that hosts a computer or project table, and a good reading light near your armchair or by the bed if you like to read in bed.

To keep the peaceful atmosphere of the bedroom, hide TVs or computers in an armoire so they're not in view except when being used. Scented candles, fresh flowers, and a beautiful decanter to hold your drinking water are wonderful touches for any bedroom.

The most important part of the bedroom is often ignored for too long. Is your mattress the right one for your back and for deep healthy sleep? Upgrade to a new pillowtop or possibly a larger size mattress for the ultimate in bedroom comfort.

And if your bedroom haven is just too wonderful to leave in the morning, how about installing a "morning bar" with a coffee maker and small refrigerator? Breakfast in bed, anyone?

Ibanez or ESP guitar?

Ibanez RG4EXFM1 or ESP MH-103

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Ibanez-RG4EXFM1-Electric-Guitar-104831706-i1400086.gc

http://www.guitarcenter.com/ESP-LTD-MH-103-Quilted-Maple-Electric-Guitar-514872-i1372185.gc

Go to the store and try them both out. Ignore all the reviews and fancy words and acutally feel which guitar fits you better. Hold it in your hands, play a few chords/notes, and by the end you will know which one you like better. I highly advise against ordering online, if you are considering that. This way you can't feel your guitar before you get it, and trust me. I almost bought a Les Paul over the internet but instead went to the stores and realized I really disliked the les paul's feel and shape, and ended up buying an SG instead because it felt a lot better in my hands and positively screamed when I hit the lower frets! Also, if you order online you have no idea if your getting a faulty one or not, no matter how expensive the guitar is, every batch has a few bad ones. I wish I had known this before I had ordered my first guitar, which now sounds completely terrible!
