How do I repair posts bowing on 104 square foot deck?
I have a 104 square-foot second-story deck that I built with a friend last year. It's supported by four 4x4x16 posts on solid concrete pilings that go 6 feet into the ground. The deck is stable, but I have noticed that in the last year the 4x4 posts (pressure treated pine) have twisted and cracked a bit -- due to wooed being cut when it was wet, a common problem -- and two of the outer posts have bowed about 1 inch away to either side of the deck. Do I need to replace these posts, and if so -- how do I do that without taking down the entire deck? Should I consider replacing them with 6x6 posts, perhaps out of another wood like Cedar?
Bowing, twisting, checking, these are all common traits of treated lumber....
Most treated lumber does not get the same amount (if any) of kiln drying that non-treated gets. (usually 6to 8% moisture content). It would be a bit of a waste of time to draw the moisture out of the treated lumber.... only to steam cook the stuff to put the copper nitrate, or other chemicals into it. The 'treated lumber' is literally sopping wet, after it has been commercially treated. So, no matter what size treated posts you use, it will likely twist, bow, or check/split.
Most treated lumber also comes with a warranty on it... its usually that little tag on the end of the board.... hopefully you saved those. You may have a possibility of getting them replaced, if they are deemed defective.
Myself, I always tend to overbuild... If I can use a 5x5, or 6x6 where most folks would put a 4x4, I will. That doesnt necessarily mean your posts must be replaced. You don't say if the bow is at the top of the posts, or down farther towards the middle. If it is just bowing out in the middle, then you can 'pull' them back in place, using either a hydraulic puller, or a 'come-along', and attach a cross brace, to hold it in place. Actually, you could do something similar if it is at the top too...
Should you decide to replace the posts.... you can support the deck with temporary posts, while you remove the old ones. A hydraulic jack would be handy too...to raise the deck an inch or so, to make installation easier. If you take two temporary posts per corner, you could span the underside of the deck, across the corners, thus supporting all sides of the deck. I would also, for safety reasons, tie these temporary posts together, by crossbracing.
Your best bet, to prevent twisting supports in the future, is to 'laminate' some timber together. For example, glue and screw 3 - 2"x6"x16ft together, making one post out of them. This would be an extremely stable post, and would resist twisting, etc. I would also use an untreated lumber... fir, would be good, and either stain and treat it, or paint it, myself. (you can even get that copper treatment, if you want)
6ft pilings -- my commendations! Ive seen too many people skimp on the foundations to their later frustrations, heheheh
Remember - Safety First! Whatever you decide to do... do it carefully, and with thought.

Solid Wood Flooring in the Home
A solid wood floor can add warm tones and a stunning finish to any room. Constructed with pieces of solid wood they have tongue and groove sides so they can be easily connected together. Each piece has a different grain which combines to form a unique look whenever it is used. There is a huge variety of solid wood floors available with many types of wood species, colours and widths available at hardwood flooring suppliers.
The most popular option is oak wood flooring. Europe and America are both the main consumer and producer of this type of hardwood flooring. Oak is available in various types including red, white and European oak, each with their own hardness, grain and colour characteristics.
A cherry wood floor is another popular choice due to its striking grain markings and solid composition. Like other wood floors it is highly resistant to damage. Over time cherry wood flooring darkens from a pale pink colour to warm dark red tone
Exotic hardwoods can give a room a unique look are now readily available at major hardwood flooring suppliers. They can be found for sale alongside other classic real wood flooring such as maple, oak and ash. Real wood flooring can be purchased in pre-finished or unfinished styles. When laying unfinished wood flooring the product can be recoated many times to increase its life and make it last considerably longer than other flooring options.
When laying solid wood floors, begin with a flat, dry and solid sub floor such as concrete, wood or cork. Carpet is not suitable as a sub base and must be removed. Any deviations in level should be rectified with suitable floor filler. A plastic barrier to stop moisture is recommended for floors that are being installed on concrete or in damp areas. Harwood flooring should also be allowed time to acclimatise before it is set down by leaving it the room for several days. For a bathroom wood floor contact you local flooring supplier for suitable product support.
If you are using a wood floor sub base the solid wood floor should be installed at right angles to the original floorboards to aid strength and stability. An expansion area around the perimeter of the room is also recommended to allow for contractions and expansions throughout the winter and summer months. This expansion gap can be covered with skirting boards or a cover strip.
Solid wood floors are tough and hard wearing and by taking care of them their life can be prolonged. Keep gravel, dirt and grit at bay by using a doormat outside and inside the front door. Regular sweeping and vacuuming will take care of any dirt that does settle on the floor and will reduce scratches and everyday wear and tear. Avoid wearing stiletto heels on solid wood floors and if possible only wear indoor shoes or slippers on its surface.
Nothing comes close to the finish that can be achieved with a solid wood floor. By installing solid wood flooring the value of a home often increases and it can give a home the edge over similar property on the market. Solid wood floors are stain resistant and do not trap dust so are especially good for allergy sufferers. There is a wide range of tones, styles and prices on the market so whether you are looking for a cheap wood floor or the ultimate in hardwood flooring, you are sure to find the right match for your room.
What brands of solid hardwood floors should I look at?
I am doing almost 1500 feet and want solid hardwood (most likely maple)..are there certain brands with floors that will last and look better?
Bruce, Bella, Mohawk.. Almost any with an aluminum oxide finish. This is one of the latest and toughest top coats on the market.
With that amount of wood I m sure you ll have a lot of sunlight in some rooms. Look into a wood that is UV protected to prevent sun fading.
You ll also qualify for pallet pricing with that amount of wood.. The store will get it, the savings should be past along. Ask for it..

Tips On Buying Guitars
There are so many guitar models on the market today. So many types including electric, acoustic, acoustic electric, nylon string, and steel string guitars. How does one make a selection? Here are a few tips to help you choose one that meets your needs.
1. It depends on how much you can afford.
With such a wealth of guitars available, a working person shouldn't have a problem finding one that fits their budget. But this doesn't mean that you should settle for anything. As the old adage goes, you usually get what you pay for. Usually the more money you invest, the greater the returns. You're going to be spending a lot of time practicing so choose an instrument that you can enjoy. An instrument that you can look forward to playing.
2. What style of music will you be playing?
The style of music to be played should influence your choice of guitar. For instance if you plan on playing rock you should buy an electric guitar, since Rock music is better suited to be played on that type of guitar. If Jazz and blues is your thing you may prefer a semi-acoustic guitar from the start. An acoustic nylon string guitar may be better suited to classical music and smooth Jazz.
3. Child or adult.
Are you a parent looking to buy a guitar for your child? Consider buying a 1/2 size or 3/4 size guitar. Your child doesn't have the reach that an adult has, so these smaller guitars are better suited. Regular size guitars will be more difficult to play and can cause a lack of interest.
You may also want to look into buying an electric guitar for your child if you can afford it. They have a small neck and very light thin strings and are therefore easier to play. If money is an issue
a second hand electric guitar may be the answer.
4. Wood type and its relation to tone.
Although there are no rules for choosing guitar woods, there is a guide that you can follow. Generally, darker woods produce a brighter tone while darker woods produces a deeper, richer tone. Medium tone wood like mahogany produce a very even smooth sound spectrum. You should compare various wood colors. The best thing to do is to listen to the tones that a guitar produces before deciding.
5. Pay attention to the guitar's features.
Your guitar must have certain important features. Don't simply focus on looks.
For example, your guitar should have die-cast machine heads (or tuning gears). With this feature, you will be able to tune your instrument more accurately and your guitar will stay in tune longer.
A solid top is also very important. A solid top usually consists of 2 solid matched pieces glued together side by side. This is of better quality than a laminated top where various woods are glued together on top of each other. With a solid top the guitar's tone will be more even and accurate and you can expect a sustaining vibration throughout the guitar's body.
6. Buy a guitar that feels good to you.
You're the one who will be playing that guitar. So you'd better buy one that feels comfortable to you, whether you're sitting or standing. For instance, if the strings are too far from the fretboard, playing will be difficult. An expensive guitar that is not comfortable is a waste. Spend time with the guitar before deciding.
7. The bottom line is sound.
If it sounds good, buy it. No two guitars can ever be the same. It's never about looks. It's about the sound that is generated through the use of the right type of wood and through superior craftsmanship.
You should be able to find a guitar easily online. You can order one that suits your needs today. Some of the best guitar prices can be found on the Internet. You even get free shipping to your door.
What is a nice brand name electric guitar (solid body) for a reasonable price?
I will play the electric guitar soon, so I need some insight for buying a electric guitar.
I want to play rock style music.
Reasonable? When you hear the sound you decide is the one you want it won't matter much either way how reasonable it is... you just save up and get it.
Gibson and Fender are the champs of solid body guitars... and they make a lot of autograph models too. They both also make much more reasonable solid body guitars under a name I'm sure you have heard of or even seen played if you are getting a guitar in 2009....
Epiphone, by Gibson make a nifty guitar. I've had both. I'm happier with my Epiphones and my one Fender.
Epiphone make big box electic guitars by habit. They are well made and sound great. The solid bodys won't let you down either. I have an SG... by Epiphone... it's called a Les Paul though... it has three pick-ups and it's the one that is the same as Gibson's. I paid 450 with case... a hard shell case... and this is in Oh Canada.
Don't forget you got to turn it up.

How to Add on to Half Steel Buildings
A steel building is an economical way to add value to your property or create storage or meeting space for your personal or commercial needs. Steel buildings today can be customized to any size, design, or shape to meet your needs. They are weather and pest resistant, stronger than most wood buildings and low on maintenance. If you have an existing steel building structure, you can easily expand this building anytime with half steel building units that attach to the structure of the existing building. Steel buildings come in a wide range of pre-fabricated as well as custom-made options to suit any budget or need.
If you have an existing steel building on your property and want to expand it to accommodate a larger interior storage or other purpose area, then you can add on to the structure with half steel units. These units are a great way to add volume and storage capacity to your steel building. You can create new bays for different purposes, like departments, offices, equipment and product storage or even vehicle maintenance areas. Half steel units can also be used to increase the structural safety of your building by providing additional protection from the external elements that can wear down the materials used in steel buildings. You can upgrade both the look and the structure of your steel building with half steel units. Here are some different ways you can add on to half steel buildings.
Roof Extensions
While this may be a more costly method of adding onto half steel buildings, this is also the best way to ensure that the addition will last longer and reduce the chances of water build-up and corrosion from developing. A roof extension is just that, it's a section of additional roofing that is attached to the existing roof at the same level, and then walls are added at a slight slope from the roof to support it. This is a great way to add onto your building if you need high ceilings or a lot of storage space for special equipment.
Expandable Endwalls
If your metal building is constructed with expandable endwalls, you can easily adjust the size of your building by expanding them and adding on half steel partitions to the sides of back of your building. This is an important thing to consider when building your original structure, if you plan to expand it in the future.
Secondary Framing
If you want to safely add half steel units to your building, then you will want them to anchor directly to the secondary framing that are sometimes called 'struts' that are under the roof supports. These can be extended and half steel units installed directly to them. This reduces the chance of the building collapsing under too much weight or extreme weather conditions.
With careful planning and solid construction techniques, you can safely add half steel units to your steel building and expand its use for future needs. Be sure to use a reputable manufacturer and crew when completing this type of project.
Drill bits that will drill through solid steel?
I bought myself a door frame mounted pull-up bar, but here's the problem... My door frame is made out of solid steel. I have a set of Black & Decker drill bits I bought at Home Depot, and they are advertised on the package to be "General Purpose". It says they will drill through metal, wood, etc... but in reality, they just get hot, and lick against the tough steel, not being able to drill even half an inch through! Honestly I don't know what kind of drill bits I need for the task at hand. Where can I get what I need? What are such drill bits called? Can someone give me a link? I'd like to order online because Home Depot sales reps are rude, and unhelpful.
The drill bit was probably adequate, but drilling at high speed may have ruined it. When drilling through metal, use low speed and high pressure. Push on the drill. The metal will come off the bit in little curls.

Making furnature out of wood is environmentally friendly. If you let the tree rot naturally it will produce methane and the bugs that eat it after it dies will produce methane. By making furnature out of it you sequester the carbon locked in the wood cellulose.
